The only times they border into the insane is when a new expansion comes out, or on the night of a new raid. But that's one week per year, and one night per 3-4 months. Your average student pulls more all nighters than that to study.
This..

It requires no time at all.. if you are not braindead and have a decent guild.

of all the mmos ive played. UO, Asherons call 1/2, guild wars, everquest 1/2, Fallen earth, age of conan, lotro, ddo, shadowbane. Perhaps some others i cant think of atm.

I played wow the shortest amount of time. I found the combat to be fairly boring, the graphics were bad, they have improved, but i never like the art direction in the game and i never felt connected to the world.

Lots of mmos out there that have strong communities, it all depends on what you are looking for. I personally recommend DDO, there is no other mmo like it. It actually pulls off dungeon crawls with friends like no other game. About as true to DnD as you can get in a game. Which also makes it infinately customizable when it comes to character builds.

Everybody likes different things and if Pvping or raiding is the thing for you than its worth it. Dont listen to Psi guy, once again trolling at wow, any other game is just as time consuming and you should watch the documentary "The Raid" watch the prescreening online during blizzcon. Majority people who play wow are not addicted, addicted is such a misused word today. If you enjoy the game then it is not a waste of time.

Keep in mind though, I'm not saying you can't be addicted to WoW. I mean, I was highly addicted to it at one point, but that had also something to do with being 12-16 and having **** all else to do. I played about 5 hours a day, on average, probably 12 in the weekend. I quit without trouble though, cold turkey. People say it's hard to quit WoW, for some reason, but it wasn't for me. Let my time run out, found other things to occupy my time, and barely think about it nowadays.

Yes, WoW can become addicting... But can't everything?

No, I waited 15 hours in LFG system and found no group.
I regret buying cataclysm and feel like I waisted $$.
It's just a re - hash of the old instances (oh wait but now with heroic mode)
oh wait nefarian is back (after we cut his head off), ragnaros is back,
they completely screwed up the lore, and they pretend no one died (everything was merely a setback) and stupid goblins and blood elves with super sajin haircuts just ruin the athmosphere and Death Wing is the most boring villain ever. OMG, not another huge dragon, after we slain like 10000's of dragon bosses before.

Stupid badge system will give epics to casual scrubs again,
if you want to PvP, you have to play a completely different game on a tiny arenas.

The engine is terribly unoptimized it breaks my fps so it's around 40's,
and the visuals look like crap, and the shoulderpads armor just looks screwed up and impossible, like why would anyone wear a taj mahal on their shoulders that doesn't even look remotely practical, and the sword size got reduced.

All the classes are so much nerfed they aren't worth playing, for example with a warlock before I was able to pull entire zone with Siphon Life corruption, and agony, now I die from 4 - 5 mobs. My top talent dot has a cast time ... Seriously what is the point in having a cast time on a dot, I might as well cast a spell then at least I get upfront damage. This game sucks balls.

If you are even remotely thinking of buying this pos game, just run for the hills.

I have a +5K achievement point Mage but I play to enjoy the game.
I have taken raiding serious at times with various guilds over the years but now, like I said, I just play to have fun, with a little kick-ass here and there.

WoW is like a mixed drink.
Fun as hell if used right, not fun if abused.
My PoV on MMO's exactly. It applies to WoW at least as much as to any of the others.

Btw, with the Cataclysm expansion, the game is updated to DX11 graphics. I haven't yet experienced that, but it should be good.

I'm not currently playing WoW, but I played lots and lots of it in its first 2-3 years. I'm thinking of taking it up again.

Someone doesn't have a guild If you want to play it solo and easy - have fun playing singleplayer games or FPS games like Call of Duty: Teamwork, not.

I myself play a warlock and I have no idea how you die from 5 mobs? That's like impossible... for the record, destruction scales best right now and is really good.. I haven't touched the other specs yet because they kinda suck without haste.

The game looks way better (everything is updated) new settings, way to many options to make it even more beautiful.

I don't agree on Deathwing.. the boss is so huge (First time we get such a huge boss) and probably going to be really hard (Well atleast for the people that get to him before the nerfs) so I will enjoy him

Badge system is terrible (I mean how are scrubs gonna get items? except the usual blues 346 or w/e) which gonna suck very soon.. and to be honest, Heroics aren't so easy now (Requires some brain) so maybe they deserve it?..

The items look VERY good for first tier... not bad at all.

Heroics are way better than the ones we had in the other expansions

Overall.. it's worth it.
