ATI HD 6870 or 6950? - Page 2

Bleh, still can't make up my mind!

I'm from the UK, and overclockers.co.uk have a good deal on at the moment for the 6870 with 5% discount bringing it down to £167, whereas the 6950 is around £203 odd. I'm not sure whether it's worth paying the extra for the 6950 - I mean, would I even be able to benefit from it's power in 1680x1050 over the 6870? I don't plan to upgrade my monitor to 1920x1080 anytime soon!

Nevermind guys. I went with the ATI HD 6870 in the end. Comes with a free MW2 game voucher, which just seemed too good of an offer to ignore at £167. Plus, I really like the fact it is really power efficient, as fast as the 5870 too in certain games but with newer tech.

Trouble is, is it really worth the little bit extra, cosidering I game at 1680x1050 and want to enjoy AA and AQ or would it be a waste? Would a card for less serve me better? I did also consider the ATI HD 5850 in this regard.

Games that I play are:

GTA IV
BF2 BC
TF2
L4D2
Metro 2033

Thanks.
Hey I actually play the same games as you and I just bought a Sapphire HD6870 and its running them great.

What he said. The only problem I see with your game list is Metro 2033.

You can play on DX11 Very High as long as DOF and Tesselation are off.

Also turn AAA on instead of MSAA, and I played with 16x AF, you could try 4x AF and see if you would like it lowered for more framerate.

I would also suggest setting up a higher static fan speed. Say 40% all the time. As I saw that my card never ramps up past 31% even though card is at 71c.

I like to stay below 70c if at all possible.

Enjoy your card man.

If your going one card then Nvidia. If your going two cards then AMD has a better second card ratio. Two 6870's is slightly better than one GTX 580 and slightly less money.

The AMD 6950 or AMD 6870 is better than a GTX 460 hands down. They both are comparable to the GTX 470. I'd go AMD.

As for the AMD 6970 it's comparable with the GTX 570 almost on par. If you go with two cards the AMD 6970 will do better than two GTX 570's.

Well, it looks like a lot of the 6950s are having no problems flashing to a fully functional 6970. May be worth while to reconsider the 6950.

Love how people ignore the thread title of "6870 or 6950" and recommend NVIDIA cards. Don't get me wrong, I like my 460 1GB (in my rendering machine), but it gets ridiculous when NVIDIA owners see somebody switch to AMD and subtly try to disorient it by going off-topic.

Other than that, I'd go with a 6950. Hell I may even go with 2 6870s...but thats probably out of your price range. All I know is they scale hellagood in crossfire.
