LCD TV used as Computer Monitor

Thread Starter
This may be a stupid question, but why dont people use LCD TV's as computer monitors? Do monitors made for computer have higher res or refresh rate?

I'm asking now because someone in my apt complex is selling a 50" Sony LCD TV for $400 and I was wondering if I could hook it up to my computer and play some half-life on it?

They do use them

So long as its got HDMI or DVI you are in business. Even better if its full HD.

Normal PC Monitors have a faster response rate.
But I think the major reason would be the contrast. I play on my 32" Samsung LCD TV and it has given me some very good use but the fact that its contrast inst very good is getting frustrating now that I have started photoshopping and what not its being a real pain so i'm picking up a new monitor on boxing day.

I use a 42inch 1080p Sharp Aquos 120mhz. I works just fine and I can game from my La-Z-boy chair.

Do you mind sitting 5-6 feet away from you monitors?

HDTV don't offer better resolution-the offer bigger pixels and hence larger displays. On order for the picture not to look like crap you need to be at least 2X as far away from the HDTV as the computer LCD.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the picture will look crap. I sit between 3 and 5 feet from my 40" screen, and am totally happy with the picture quality. I'd also be sitting this far away regardless of screen size, so I may as well go big.

Should be a good read for anyone thats interested.
More specifically,

So for me, sitting

I've been using a 32" TV for 3 years now. The DPI sucks for the viewing distance (~2.5') and it's slower than a TN panel, but the gaming experience is worlds better compared to the 24" I was rocking before. Input lag is no worse (actually, better IMO) than my MVA panel LCD I used previously.

Also using a 32" Viera S1 1080p. Input lag is very low on this model.
