Is digital surround sound in games possible?

If I connect my Z5500 to my X-Fi Xtreme Music via digital/optical connection, will I get surround sound effect in games? Because I seem to remember to get surround sound in games you need the regular analog 3 pin connectors.

Yeah, that's what DTS and DD are for, they compress multi-channel sound to be sent over Coax/Optical.

Just make sure the game and windows are set to 5.1 and not stereo/headphones.

This is just for information, I am not going to try this now.
This is what I want to know, do games even use DD or DTS?

I can probably count DD/DTS PC games on one hand, and most of them are ancient. 100% of PS3/Xbox360 games all have DD 5.1 tracks (for obvious reasons). PC games were not developed for home theater in mind, so no.

I use a S/PDIF out i added to my motherboard, connected via digital coaxial to a Yamaha AV receiver- HTR 5930 with 5.1 speaker set up it came with nothing special cost 300 for everything.Works good for movies and music but like astrallite said PC games usually suck in my experience, dialog audio can be a pain especially ,i have to change quality and speaker settings often to get it working sometimes due too sample rates and formatt issues.Anyone know a souncard fix for my receiver, Via Audio codecs are what my P5Q pro uses now.

My sound card can real-time encode any audio stream into DD/DTS. So it really doesn't matter what the game or movie wants to output.

Is this feature common on other cards?
