i7 950 running hot on Silver arrow - Page 4

fastest cpu speed on lowest voltage, at the lowest fan speed, is a worthy goal :-)

push vs. pull has been argued since the dawn of time, here it is on overclock.net:

"Regarding push vs pull...not sure. I know in radiator thermal based testing that I ended up with some varied results (pull being better in low speed, push being better in high speed)."

awesome OC's there danimal, is the silver arrow the best Air Cooler?

The push seems more logical to me also.

It's going alright,
Vcore: 1.23
CPU @ 3.8Ghz
My RAM is causing BSOD's

I have a few questions though, how do I set voltage divider to 1:6 on RAM?
should I use 21 or 23 CPU ratio?
My RAM is 1866Mhz 9-9-9-9-24
Can I just set all RAM settings to Auto and then overclock the CPU with voltage and BCLK, changes? and then later set my RAM to 1600 ~1866 Mhz and maybe cas8 OC
post #37 of 57
you should be able to manually set the ram multipler lower, well below 1866mhz speed, so that the ram is running slowly, which should eliminate it as a source of the bsod's.

overclock the cpu to stability, then work on the ram.

How do you know that your RAM is causing your BSOD? What code does it give you? As for setting the divider, that would be DRAM Frequency or similar, based on your previous posts. Every BIOS is a bit different, so just find what controls your RAM speed and set it to either the lowest possible divider or the manufacturer specified speed. In either case, the timings and voltage should be as specified by the manufacturer. Don't try to do any overclocking or tightening timings until you are all done with your CPU overclock.

For higher clocks it would probably be better if you use 23x for your CPU ratio.

The BSOD gave a 124 code error: I was reading that it's QPI/uncore that neems to be increased. I set it Auto for now

Okay, Im going to get the RAM out of the equation for now.
So I just set my manufacturer's timings: 9-9-9-9-24 and voltage: 1.65V
freq:1866Mhz, but I'll set it lower for now
havent played around with vcore that much, I want to go for 4Ghz, this overclocking is fun and addictive

although, PC is stable at the moment with acceptable temps:CPU @ 3.8Ghz and RAM 1866Mhz
temps mid 50 in Black Ops(which i remember was quite CPU intense) and prime95: mid 60's

I aiming for 4Ghz prime load under 70C, I'ts summer here so temps will be a bit off, I'll leave my tweaking for the nighttime

UPDATE***
I think im stable @ 4ghz
CPU @ 4ghz RAM running 1700Mhz with cas9
Vcore: 1.29V (1.3 in Bios)
idle CPU temp:40C
Load temps prime95(running 10min)(small FFTs): MAX: 75C AVG:71 LOW:69
ambient: 26C
Realtemp starts sounding it's alarm when it hits 75C

are those temps alright?
I might be able to lower vcore a bit, ill report back how hot the CPU gets in games and normal use

so far it's going alright, what do you guys think?

That looks like you're doing really well. You should be able to complete all of the Small FFT tests with no errors, freezes, or BSOD. Once you do this, then it's time to move on to the Prime 95 Blend Test. This one takes a bit longer; there is some debate about what is acceptable, but most folks argue that between 8 and 24 hours of continuous testing is necessary to ensure absolute stability. Personally, I use 24 hours as the standard, but you should do your own research and decide based on that.

Keep your RAM where it is for now. When you start the Blend test, you're bringing the memory and memory controller into the equation. That's why we made sure that the CPU was 100% stable first. Expect that you will have to start playing with PLL, VTT, and IOH voltages when you run the blend test.

Your temperatures look all right, considering your very high ambient temperature. Just keep an eye on things and don't go much above where you are now. My i7 950 maxes out near 85C at over 1.4v, and even I think that's way too hot. It looks like you've got a good overclocker on your hands, though, so enjoy it!
