since my last post i went and beat this game
it's actually a pretty awesome game
using the keyboard wasn't an issue compared to cod or something
About time I did something with this game other than benchmarking

I beat the game, I thought it was ok.
I found it to be a bit repetitive though.
After I completed it I went back to the last chapter of where I could be in town and just killed everything that moved.

So, I beat the game earlier and was pretty disappointed it was over so soon. If I remember correctly the original Mafia clocked in at around 20+ hours. I beat this one in a little over 12. In fact that's probably my only real complaint, because everything else was amazing.

Had high expectations coming from Mafia, but Illusion did good by the game. Not quite as good, as I thought II lost some of the original's dramatic presentation, but it still felt like a top notch gangster flick. Some folks complained about the pacing after Chapter 6 or so, but I liked that it picked up a bit.

Plus, in Chapter 14..
I couldn't believe Vito and Joe were the ones that assassinated Tommy Angelo. It was a pretty awesome reveal, but also felt kinda bad that I killed... me..

Makes me wonder if Illusion had that planned all along or if it came about after the fact.

Loved the game. My only complaint is that it was too short. Contrary to popular opinion, I didn't find the 'driving around' part of it to be excessive.

Erratum: After reading sugarton's post, the lack of free roam after completion was also a disappointment. Otherwise, great game.

Mafia II to me is a great game that was just horribly crippled by crappy design decisions. The lack of a proper free roam mode is probably the most destructive to it's enjoyment. Once you beat it you are presented with the option of playing the entire game again on a higher difficulty or just not playing it at all ever again. Want to just run around and do your own thing? Gotta do it during a mission. This of course presents the problem that if you die, you are put back to wherever the mission would have started you off at, sometimes making you put up with cut scenes and un-necessary forced driving/walking/fighting until you get to a point where you can go off and do your own thing.

Another thing that irked me was the lack of a proper save feature. Like so many other crippled games, Mafia uses a "checkpoint" system for saving. This of course prevents you from saving before a particularly difficult gunfight (or afterwards so you don't have to do it again if you die afterward). The checkpoint system strikes me as incredibly un-necessary to implement.

While the game is gifted with a strong storyline, cutting edge graphics and a fair assortment of sounds, it is mainly offset by the problems outlined above. Thus far the DLC offerings have also been meager at best. A lot of the time I got the impression that features were cut short or cut out entirely during the development process. The car modding system is a good example of this. It probably initially had a lot more to it or had more of a benefit. I also felt like the clothes selection was probably initially intended to be more diverse.

Mafia II, I am disappoint.

Not really crippling IMO, but to each his own.

Did anyone try out a free roam mod? Does it really work without any glitches?
