Unable to run 3 displays from a 6950.

Thread Starter
Hello,

I got a 6950 today to replace a 285 and 8400GS combination.
I am able to run 2 displays using any combination of ports on the back, whether that be two DVI, DVI and DVI (via MDP adapter), HDMI and DVI, HDMI and DVI (via MDP adapter). However, if I try to run 3 displays using DVI / DVI / DVI (via MDP adapter) it refuses to extend the desktop to the 3rd display, requiring instead that I disable one of the currently displayed monitors. Each of the monitors are 24" each at 1920x1200.

You can see the error I get in CCC here:
n0SDm.png

I've tried both MDP ports as well as a VGA adapter running off the DVI adapter in the MDP port, made no difference.
I currently have a 750W PSU, which in theory should be more than enough for the 300W or so I need for the 6950 at max load.

I made sure all of the nVidia drivers were uninstalled before I installed the AMD drivers. I've re-installed the AMD drivers again too, after uninstalling and restarting, but that made no difference either.

If you have any ideas about any other combinations I could try or any solutions to my problems, I'd be delighted to hear them. I'm at a bit of a loss, for now I've got the 8400GS back in, running alongside the 6950 - something I don't really want to have for too much longer.

Thanks.

What adapter are you using for the Mini Display Port? From what I've read it still needs to be an active adapter in order for Eyefinity to work.

This first thing you need to do is if you are planning on using your card for eyefinity the setup has to be dvi dvi displayport or dvi, dvi, hdmi as there are only 2 dvi lanes in the card. Also when in CCC make sure to right click on the displays and hit "create group" and everything should work fine. I'm not exactly sure which inputs you have on the back of that card, but I know you can use a combination of Dvi,Dvi,displayport. If using a display port adapter make sure it is an active display port adapter and not passive. Passive will not work.

It doesn't *need* to be active. But certain adapters are just crap and don't work. I had this happen once getting my Eyefinity going and had to RMA to NewEgg.

That is not correct. DVI and HDMI use the same lanes since they are essentially the same output just using different ports. You are correct about the active adapter though, as passive adapters don't support the resolutions required for Eyefinity if I'm not mistaken.

My DP-VGA passive adapter works just fine.

I am using a standard non-active adapter as seen here. In terms of Eyefinity, I'm not 100% sure that's what I'm after, I just want a "standard" 3-display set up, regardless of whether I'm in a game or not.

Yeah, I'm using DVI / DVI / DP, CCC sees all three but is only allowing me to have 2 active. If I go to Create Group, I only get the option of a 2x1 or a 1x2 setup, there is no option for a triple monitor group.

I have a feeling this may be my problem.

Have you tried the latest hotfix? It's meant to be a fix for Eyefinity so it may help.

1920x1200 resolution, you need an ACTIVE DisplayPort adapter. 1080p and below is fine on passive adapters.

And no, you CANNOT "extend" the desktop across 3 monitors with one card. You CAN use Eyefinity though, to make them all one big display (using said adapters).

I missed the x1200 part in the OP. Good catch.
