that's velodyne's new model. i could literally call velodyne and trade my old 20 year old ULD 18 and get a huge discount on one of those because of it. they have the same exact specs aside from mine is a bigger cabinet, and the parts inside are bigger. it's the same exact servo circuit and everything, same SPL at every frequency range.

the first two show the scale and size of my new sub. sophie is a 60 pound half rot, half Shepard with golden retriever mix.

basically it also shows the transition of me breaking my desk and needing a new one and making something new out of it afterwards that works perfect for my room and sub.

see that radiator by the way? i couldnt figure out haw to have a setup i like in my room til now, after i broke my desk lol.

img0887m.jpg

one the new legs for this is a bookshelf i modified, so there is no wasted footprint space, at all.

i basically salvaged the top of my desk and used the radiator as a wall shelf and wedged a modified bookshelf and used some other random piece of furniture as the third leg. it is more stable now actually lol, the old partical board legs were garbage and broke when i tried to put this desk in my closet.

the cut out slot works perfect because it faces my bathroom door perfectly.

took that out of the pic setup thread, but still, same pics.

so i must admit after hearing this thing for a while, i have never heard a sub this good in my life, ever. it hits deeper than anything ive ever heard, but more importantly, the sound quality coming from it ust RAPES any subwoofer ive ever heard. i'm sure theres better, for thousands of dollars. this cost me $200. someone show me a $200 better sub please. it bottoms out at 13 htz. at 20 htz it gets up to 104db with .5% distortion, ive heard it myself and believe velodyne's claims. i'm curious what others thing of me nabbing this. also, my friend's dad was THE service center for velodyne and pretty much for bang and olufson at one point. he's the one who sold me this. this sub was the actual sub driver and amp that the other ULD 18's were specced after and calibrated to. i thought that was pretty cool.

one thing that's really weird to me is if i really start pushing this thing, a few thigns happen, my house starts falling apart, it starts popping and turning off, applying the servo break. the weird thing about the house falling apart from it is, my drywalls start moving, my windows start rattling, but there is almost no exursion on the woofer, i cant feel it that hard in my chest but definately can. but ive had my friends ghetto rap 10 inch subs in his car hit me WAY harder than that, but they sound like garbage. but the weird thing is his 10 inch subs wouldnt do much to the structure of his car, this velodyne really would. about the servo. i'm pretty sure the buzzing on my NAD T751 is messing with the servo and making it think it's extra distortion to apply the breaks so the voice coil wont get messed up. it's popping and turning off not even getting pushed half as hard as it could and was at my friends house with no issues. this is just a thoery though.it's not a huge deal because it can go loud enough for my comfort by far.

i thought it was broken for a while when my friend played some hardcore dubstep on it, it was raping my house too lol.

also, anyone have any reccomendations for quality bass to test this thing out with?

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsYcRSNL8To[/ame]

that was pretty good to test it. the big drums are crazy when you have a high quality version.

btw you seem to be a subwoofer expert or thereabouts.

mind listing me some subs that can produce 104db at 20 htz with 0.5% distortion? car or HT subs work. i might try to build one some day out of some drivers and see how close i can get to this smile.gif

Well Corey, you did point out in your previous thread that you have an aftermarket amp, so the driver will be playing without being hampered by the servo, and thus can't possibly achieve 0.5% THD at 20Hz at any SPL.

However, it may actually end up being a better sub. Velodyne is so obsessed with THD that a lot of people dislike the sound of their servos.

But it is a good sub. You won't be able to find a new sub that's better, true, but asking if you can do better for $200, of course. It depends on your negotiating skills smile.gif

True smile.gif but assuming my receiver wasn't buzzing I bet I would be on spec lol. I gotta fix this receiver some time soon. It's an awesome receiver, nAD T 751, I'd take it over any big box brand receiver made because I'm going to build a 5 channel quad 405 amp with the help of my friends dad, then I never have to worry about amplification again.

By the way, I thought it was cool that my velodyne amp is a class b amp for a sub smile.gif

One way to find to best place to position your subwoofer, is the crawl method. Pick a spot for the subwoofer, play a couple of test tones and then crawl around (usually the perimeter) until you hear the best bass.

For instructions on how to do this:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV3oLLMgS-M"]link[/ame]

If you really are hardcore finding the best setup which I am sure you will considering that is a very nice sub, I would encourage going out and buying a SPL meter and a test cd:

Here's the guide attached:

And no, nothing comes even close to that sub for $200, although I am quite perplexed why you it set up in what appears to be a tiny room. Overkill to the max lol, this thing can power a small concert.

thanks for advice smile.gif i'll use that when i get a bigger room or new place lol.

i got this sub because i was about to buy the sbx10 from m audio and i was talking to my friends dad about the specs on it. he was like "Sh--, i got a velodyne ULD18 in the garage i'm about to put on creigs list, go search sterophile for it's review and come back when you wanna buy it for $200" so thats what i did, next day, i bought it ^_^

yeah i know its overkill, but i never have to worry about my sub again, since he's got tones of parts, he can help me repair it if all else fails.
