Sound through Graphics card...

Thread Starter
Hi there. Is it possible to output sound through a dvi cable from the graphics card? I've always thought that the dvi cable only transmits (EDIT) video, but now i need to find a way of passing sound through there if possible. I remember I read something ages ago about using a 2 pin connecter to conect the sound card to the graphics card, but i can't really remember what the point of doing that was.

If I'm not mistaken, DVI only transmits video not audio so you will need to figure out another way to output sound from your computer to whatever you are trying to hook up to. Your best bet would be to output sound straight from your motherboard (or sound card if you have one) via an optical or 3.5 mm cable.

HDMI only does that. Just output the sound from mobo.

Ordinarily i would, but the problem i have is that I will have two output sources of sound, my ps3 and pc, but only one input connecter on my sound system. The hope was to have the sound routed through the monitor to the speakers. I'm trying to think of a way to get around this, but am failing. The input for my speakers is 3 2.5mm jacks, one for sub, front + rear (black green and orange cable).

ahaaaa, I might have figured out a solution... What I'm thinking of doing is getting an optical splitter, (bypassing the monitor) and connecting the ps3 + pc to that, then finding a cable that will connect the optical splitter to the speakers. The thing is i'm not sure such a cable exists. The input required on the speakers is 3 headphone jack connections. I need a cable with that on one end and an optical connection on the other. I'm going to keep looking, but any help greatly appreciated.
