Request - what is the wattage used by a GTX 470 at 1.2 volts?

My overvolted GTX 470s trip my 1,000W PSU when pushed to 1.2v so I am wondering how much power these things really consuming from their 6-pin connectors. If it's tripping my PSU, it seems like system load must be ~1200w at the wall. That would mean that at least the first-gen Fermi parts have a terrible ratio between voltage increase and required wattage.

Part of the problem is also that the HX1000 PSU I have is an older design, and it's essentially two 500w PSUs in one box. So if the two 6-pin connectors on an individual highly OC'd and overvolted GTX 470 push, say, ~250w, I can't put both video cards on the same "miniPSU" and I can't put one of them on the same "miniPSU" as the CPU/motherboard without gimping my OC. (Remember that the motherboard is loaded with 75wx2 from the PCI-E slots of the video cards.)

The system immediately restarts. I have tried voltage between 1.12v and 1.2v, and I can push harder when I place one GPU on 12V1 and another on 12V2 compared to placing both on 12V2. This is hardly ideal, however, since 12V1 also includes the mobo, CPU, and the 75x2w power draw from the PCI-E slots.

According to Corsair's own HX1000 rail diagram, both GPUs should be placed on 12V2 for this reason. Of course they didn't account for crazy GPUs like this one. To be clear, this PSU doesn't really have "rails" - 12V1 and 12V2 are just two different 500w PSUs that comprise the 1kW unit.

Oh trust me, I know all about the HX1000. It's an entertaining little unit. hehe

Anyway, it isn't that they weren't accounting for the GTX 470, but it's that they weren't accounting for someone trying to put 1200mV through it.

If you were to replace the HX1000, then what could you afford? There are definitely quite superior units out there that don't cost much more.

I would probably go with an AX1200. I know the HCP is nominally better but I've got to draw the line on PSU cost somewhere. Then again I might just do nothing. Have to draw the line on "hardcore" somewhere, too. Hopefully the next generation of cards are smarter about power usage, assuming they move to 32nm.
