Upgraded from gtx260 to ati 6970

Thread Starter
I just upgraded from a gtx 260 that had two 6 pin power connectors, to a ati 6970 with a six pin and an 8 pin connector. I discovered after setting the card in my cpu that i dont have a way to get the 8 pin to the video card. I have a modular nspire psu. I took my computer to a local computer store here (they're all idiots but i was short on time) and they told me to connect the six pin into the 8 and call it a day as long as i wasnt running high resolutions. I was sceptical, but i tried it anyway. The computer just started screaming at me when i turned it on so that obviously didnt work... What options are out there to get a PCI E 8 pin connector without buying another PSU? If there is no way, then what PSU would you recommend without breaking the bank?

That local store must of been full of idiots. you still need the TDP of the GPU to run it.. The 6xxx series has a little speaker on it, JUST FOR THE POWER connectors, it will scream at you if it doesnt have it. i whould take a look in the box for a 2x molex to 8 pin, or buy one online. i don't think a 6 pin to 8 pin will work, and if it does, it will probally not boot due to instability. it's like saying, ohh my CPU needs 200 watts to be stable, i'll just put 100watts in and see!

EDIT: a 2x 6pin to 8 will work fine. sorry dixson01974's link is good. +1 rep to you.

It will work fine. The other 2 pins are ground wires and ground is ground.
