Game trainers mistaken as viruses?

Thread Starter
I've downloaded the Far Cry v1.4 +24 trainer and the Grand Theft Auto 4 v1.0.7.0 +11 trainer, and both have been identified as trojans by Comodo and Ad-Aware. Are these really viruses, or is it the nature of the programs that make them look like viruses?

False negatives. If you are really concerned they are virus don't use them though.

I think it's because they are designed to manipulate other programs' values when they are running in the memory, and therefore are mistaken as viruses. BUT a lot of trainers actually do contain viruses and trojans, i'd say about 90% of them

The trainers work their magic by altering memory code. Any program that is seen by an anti virus injecting and modifying code is usually flagged up.

As long as you got them from a 'reputible' source i.e. Cheathappens etc you should be ok.

By their very nature they are defined at virus's as they attempt to modify running code which a general/3rd party program should not be able to access.

Ok thanks. I'm only getting these from popular sites that I've used in the past, so I doubt I'll need to worry too much about an actual infection.

I think you mean false positive.

Anyway, most trainers are flagged as some sort of generic trojan or virus because of the way they work.
As others have said, trainers work by modifying data within your RAM and thus can do all kinds of sketchy things to your system if the author wants to.

For the most part, trainers are harmless but do take care when using them. Leaving one open while going into a multiplayer game would result in you being banned for cheating!
