Is Thermal Paste Electrically Conductive?

Thread Starter
Well am just reapplying new thermal paste on my GPU.
am just wondering weather if not applied correctly i might blow things up by bridging connections on the PCB or Processor.

this is the thermal paste in question:

STARS-612
thermal conductividy :>1.8.29W/m-k
Thermal resistance :>0.123 C-in
20%metal Oxide Compound

If you want to use a non-conductive TIM, AS5 Ceramique will do the job.

"Céramique does not contain any metal or other electrically conductive materials. It is a pure electrical insulator, neither electrically conductive nor capacitive."

Any TIM with metal can be electrically capacitive, but are not conductive.

This means while the TIM may hold a charge, it does not transfer a charge from one object to another.
But heir is always a chance of something going wrong if you just slather it on there.

Use Shin-Etsu or IC-7 if they are available in your area. smile.gif

how many things that can take a charge dont pass it on?

as5 says its not conductive but if you test it with a multimeter you make a circuit :|

What are you talking about? AS5 is NOT electrically conductive. It is comprised of microscopic conductive particles suspended in a dielectric. This is why it is slightly capacitive (two conductors separated by insulator). The only way to make it conductive is to put a gallon of it in a centrifuge for a few days to extract the particles.

Virtually no TIM is electrically conductive except for the Coollaboratory stuff.
Once again...

All right calm down. Don't get upset, he didn't say it was conductive.

I used mx-3, its not capacitive or conductive. I think the cheaper generic stuff can sometimes be conductive, On a gpu its best to play it safe and go with something non capacative and non conductive too.
