4890 to ???

Thread Starter
So, I am planning to upgrade my GPU soon, probably sometime next month. I don't plan on getting a new monitor anytime soon, so 1680x1050 is going to be my max resolution I will be gaming at. I am currently playing BC2, FFXIV and Civ V. I can max everything out on these, but I seem to get drops in FPS when there's alot going on. I would like to minimize that as much as possible. My budget is $300 at the moment, but that could change depending on my tax return amount. So I would just like to get others opinions on where I should go with this upgrade? I have been looking at several cards, but I just want to see what everyone thinks. Everything else in my sig rig will be staying the same until next July.

wellif you want to stay with ati get the 6970.

if you want to go nvidia get a gtx570

its that simple.

you want a REAL upgrade not some half assed jump in performance. get at least 2x performance jump.

At that resolution, anything in the 460/6870+ range would be more than enough. I'd say a 570 or a 6950 if you really want to spend close to your budget. You probably won't need that much power now for that resolution, but good for a little future proofing.

Thanks for the input keep it coming. I have been leaning towards the 6950, as it seems like a pretty good price/performance card. Originally I had been thinking the 6870, but for $50 more, I can just get the 6950. Still not 100% sure the extra cash is worth the small bump in performance. Thoughts on that?

Agreed.

For 1680x1050 a 4890 should STILL be quite sufficient, however if you're inclined to upgrade for the heck of it then you shouldn't need more than a 6850/70 (and that would still be overkill a bit).
If you do plan on upgrading your display or perhaps adding a second for eyefinity et. al then a 6950 would just be in your budget.

There's a Gigabyte model on Newegg for $299 shipped plus an additional $20 rebate.
