Missing Memory

Thread Starter
I have just bought the following kit:
  • Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
  • Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H H55 Socket 1156 VGA DVI HDMI Out 8 CHannel Audio MATX Motherboard
  • Corsair 60GB Force SSD 2.5" SATA-II Read = 285MB/s, Write = 275MB/s 50,000 IOPS
  • Kingston 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1066MHz triple Channel Memory Kit

For some reason in windows it's saying that I have 6 GB (3.98GB Usable).

Looking in the BIOS under the M.I.T. screen shows that the first 2 slots, and the forth slot have rame in them, but "Enabled Slots" only specifies the first two slots. as seen in this image: http://twitpic.com/3j64yy

I have a separate media pc - basically exactly the same but an i3 instead of an i5. That machine can detect the full 6 gb fine. So I pulled the i3 out, put the i5 in, and got exactly the same as above. The only difference is that the i3 uses the intel inbuilt graphics, the i5 doesn't support this so has an external graphics card.

I have tried increasing the voltage to 1.6v but that didn't fix it.

So basically any RAM in slot 3 or 4 get detected, but not enabled. In Windows (64 bit) it shows 6 GB but only 4 GB available.

I am totally out of ideas, I know the motherboard and the ram are fine - so could the processor be broken?

Thanks for any help - and have a good Christmas!

i had this problem, just re-arrange your ram till it detects it, at least that what worked for me

If I'm not mistaken, that board only supports dual channel ram.

It sounds to me like you have a dead memory slot on the board. You obviously need to RMA the MoBo, the sooner the better!

Thats the strange thing - it does detect it, just doesn't enable it. I have re-arranged it a lot already and the arrangement it is in worked with a i3, but not with the i5.

I'm sure I have either missed some other difference between the i3 and i5 or my i5 is broken.

Would it work with an i3 if that was the case?

Again, because it worked with the i3 I suspect its more likely to be the CPU (only the memory management is done on the CPU if I remember correctly now) been a while since I built a pc so I could be way off.

try resetting your cpu and ram
I searched through a load of these threads, and in the end they always go dead without really an answer!

I'm trying not to touch the ram as I knew that worked with the i3. When I thought it was a bent pin issue I re-set the CPU several times to no avail. This is driving me nuts!

Did you enable memory remapping feature on the bios? Also you are correct, CPU manages the ram, so one CPU could detect all the ram and another fail at it.
