You'll want to do some of the side quests to gain XP and gear before going on the main quest much. You can choose the main quest from the Pip-Boy menu and it does a decent job of guiding you through. But seriously, you'll want to do some side quests first and get at least one companion before you get too far.

I must admit im not that impressed either. Its like the oblivion game engine, so ancient. Im just not 'feeling' the game. I dunno i loved fallout 3 but...

I bought it the day it came out. Really excited for the thing but I had to force myself to play it... Even then I gave up. If your into westerns in general i'm sure you'll love it but i'm more into post apocalyptic mad max, the road, even book of eli sort of feel and look like fallout 3. I wasn't interested in the sunny skies, 6 shooters, casinos, and western music. Then the story and characters weren't nearly as good as fallout 3 imho so... Meh. I might throw it on and play some day but I might never touch it again. I just finished a play through of fallout 3 and mass effect 1, those games are still rock solid and are good enough for many play throughs.

This is gonna sound bad and I'm sorry if I offend anyone by saying this, but if you just bought Fallout 3 today my advice is bring it back and say it doesn't work. You should be able to get some credit and you won't miss much by not playing it.

Don't head straight to vegas; do some side questing first.
(don't make a bee-line from Goodsprings you'll get massacred - stick to the eastern highways)

The NCR Mojave outpost and Primm will give you some decent xp, weapons/gear and even lead you into some more developmental quests.

* If there was a place I'd say to definitely make sure you go fairly quick would be Novac.
Your own hotel room (once earned) and Boone early on are pretty hefty assets to have.

go to primm and the NCR to start your leveling. then go around and kill a bunch of dudes till you level up a bit. then go to novac.

then freeside. it's got some good quests.

I tried going to vegas off the bat and got mutilated, so worked on the main quest. You get there eventually and it's a bit more rewarding to understand what's going on prior to making it to the strip.

I played 40 hours before even entering Freeside that's around the strip. There's TONS more things to do outside the strip than in. I'm really disappointed in New Vegas making it seem like it was gonna be like Las Vegas. It's just 3 little sections.

Really need to get your barter, science, and speech up to get stuff or cheap stuff out of people.

thats another thing. the game sort of forces you to be a jack of all trades. You can't really work on one element (sniper or stealth kinda thing) all out. To get certain things and quests you need to be well rounded. And sometimes you don't get a perk when you level up?! I didn't like that one bit.

Black Mountain.

you're supposed to do sidequests first before going to New Vegas. kinda how you do sidequests before heading into DC.
