need for speed shift or need for speed hot pursuit?

Which game do you think is better?
I'm looking for a good racing game and I like upgrading my cars a lot.
And I used to play need for speed most wanted and liked that..
So which one should I get?

I haven't played HP, but there is a Shift demo on Steam so you can DL that and try it out.

Shift is more of a Forza/GT5 type game where it's closed circuits and you outrace your opponents.

Hot Pursuit is kind of like Most Wanted where you outrun the cops and its more open than Shift would be. No idea if there are car upgrades and what not in HP.

Need for Speed: Shift allows for more customization than Hot Pursuit, which allows no customization except for the color of your car, which you are forced to choose from a set in that series.

Played through Hot Pursuit and I was very disappointed. There is no free roam where you can get cops - just drive around. The races are only a few minutes each and aren't much fun, to be honest. The power-ups are meh at best.

Shift is an awesome game, great graphics, you get to customize your car to the extreme. Best gameplay from racing games (excluding the GT series)

shift is pretty fun except from the input lag sometimes, if you have a wheel, you won't have nearly as many problems as keyboard users. Eventually you'll get used to the input lag though
