It's supposed to be in preparation for Incarna, the update where you can walk in space stations and such. The most recent rumors I've heard is that feature might come out in the summer update.

Well, it's being released this winter in the next update. The new character creator is in anticipation of the Incarna Patch this coming summer which will allow you to walk around inside stations and socialize with people and open stores. (Hopefully the shops will give purpose to the random commodities in the game)

EDIT : Aww, I type too slow.

to bad they shot them selves in the foot making it a niche game. If they ever totally revamp the rediculous skill system ill be back in a heart beat though. I think it would be awesome if planets had cities and ruins you could explore and stuff making the EVE systems REALLY MASSIVE not just a bunch of stargates with you being a ship.

They've begun fixing the skill system by removing the learning skills in the latest update.

tbh i like the skill system, if you dont like it then its not for you, eve is eve today because of what it is, learning skill removal was necessary as it was a poorly thought out time sink, the entry barrier into eve has dropped significantly with their tutorials and other little tweaks.

But their skill system, market sim, consequence based pvp, that all makes eve... well EVE! what you're asking for is masseffectoblivionfallouteve.... and well, thats just not EVE...
