SSD Drive Cloning Blues

Thread Starter
I have done a lot of research and I am coming to the realization that I will not be able to clone my current OS drive to my new Mushkin 90GB SSD without taking a serious performance hit. I have cloned more HDDs than I can count using Acronis TrueImage and Ghost but now I am seeing a lot of people talk about alignment issues with virtually any type of cloning to an SSD, with drive performance taking a hit of 30% and more because of "alignment" issues. I was willing to upgrade my Acronis TI to 2011, but even the newest version does not support proper SSD cloning apparently.

If I have to reinstall my OS to enjoy my new Mushkin 90GB SSD I will do it, but I'm just pissed because my rig runs perfectly and is tweaked in every aspect like registry, startup, services, backup, network shares, HTPC software, etc. It took me a long time to get that way. I haven't had to do a wipe and reload since about 2006. My main rig OS has just constantly upgraded and evolved since I had a 4200+ and a 7900GT running on XP Pro back in the day.

Maybe for kicks I'll do a perfect drive clone and then wipe and reload and benchmark them both to see exactly wheat type of hit I am taking. Then I'll post up some results for future reference. At least something good will come of it.

When I do wipe the drive, what is the best way to do so with an SSD? I am learning that a simple long format will not prepare it for first OS install correctly. Is this correct?

Clonezilla or Acronis True Image should clone without alignment issues.
