3 screens + gtx 480

Since ATI has eyefinity you only need one card,

With nvidia you have to have another card in sli for nvidia surround.

what would be the easiest way - cheapest way to get three screens with my gtx 480?

I assume you'll be wanting to game across all three monitors, in which case you'll need another 480..

Your two choices are: A second GTX480, or a one of Matrox triplehead2go units. Both are, sadly, similar priced.

yep, only AMD has the ability to run 3 screens on a single gpu for now...come on green team, hurry up already! I would have went green if nvidia was able to power everything from a single gpu

Actually, AMD cheats, display port shifts some of the display driving hardware to the display (which is one of the reasons they cost so much)
Edit: If you look it, Nvidia's cards have had the horsepower to run 3 displays at once for ages now, look at Soft-TH, you just need a way to output that power to a 3rd display

please don't take this the wrong way, as I am no fan boy of either product, just like many people...I go w/ whatever works for my budget and hardware

but I'm not understanding, how "AMD cheats"

Yeah, this will be cheaper as you have to add less money to get a 6970.

But, from self experience, playing in surround or eyefinity, requires A LOT of gpu power. And I mean it. A LOT.

Those who play on a single card, have to most times lower details, or ditch AA for good performance. Even if its a 6970.

I would say that trying to get a second hand 480 might do the trick.

Playing in multi monitor is never cheap

Well.. it's a cheat Nvidia could use easily, and there is a GTX460 from (I think) Gigabyte which has displayport fitted so it can run 3 displays from one card.

Displayport is a socket which doesn't have any display driver hardware behind it, that job is shifted to the display end of things, so all the card has to do is render the image for the screen, but it doesn't actually have to turn that image into what's displayed on the screen.
Old displays are dumb things, which only put on the screen what the GPU's display driver tells them to. If you go to Displayport, then the display has to be smarter, and do some of the rendering work itself. There are almost no cards on the market today which have the hardware to run more than 2 DVI or VGA screens at once on the same card.

I personally regard displayport as a cheat, a way to cut costs on the GPU, while making it stupidly expensive to actually use that rendering power at the user's end. The roughly $100 premium on identical displays to have display port fitted makes me very annoyed.
