6850 help

Thread Starter
I bought my brother a 6850 for Christmas, only problem is I didn't know the n00b had a 300w power supply. Besides having to buy a new power supply, he has a micro atx motherboard. Will this card even be able to fit on a board that small in a micro atx case?

sounds like you need to do some research before you buy gifts like this, on the go I don't know the exact size of that kind of mobo, imo, take the card yourself and give him something else!

after hearing he has a micro atx mb and a 300w psu, I could tell his cpu would be a bottleneck in games with the 6850..

not to mention; does he even need a 6850 for his use? I would assume you would have more than a 300w PSU in 2010 if you played games

If the mATX board has a PCIe slot, it will fit. As for the case, a few mATX cases do support full-sized cards, but if the case is from HP/Dell/etc, then, you'll probably have to buy a new case or do an open-air setup.

depends on the micro atx mb and depends on the psu

but most likely, it doesn't sound like it will work

This. Otherwise I don't think 6850 is larger than 4870, which does fit on my MicroATX, but with some issues- No room for the HDDs, very hard to get the cables done right... such poop
But 300W is too little, I believe.

I didn't think he'd have a microatx case, and I was hoping he had a larger power supply just because he built this computer only about a year ago. He's not real computer savvy though so I guess he didn't know to buy a bigger psu.

I have an extra mid sized case I could transfer all his parts over into, but he'd still have to buy a new psu. I may just give him my 4670 and put the 6850 in my case. :O

you might as well just do so!=) is still a nice gift nontheless (for what he needs it for anyway, I assume it can play hd movies just fine?)

That will run the card with no issues. Now, about the case, find out what it is and take a pic.
