help me find the best gaming laptop for 800 - Page 2

Should have seen the other replies earlier. If you were to buy the top FX used, it would run around $750 and blow any of those other laptops away in terms of gaming. The CPU is a little on the weaker side, but GPU matters more in gaming.

I know I'm busting your absolute budget by $25, but newegg should have more refurbished ASUS G73 in on 1/4/11

i7 720 and a Mobility HD5870 [underclocked desktop HD5770], 6GB DDR3.

I own one and can tell you they are pretty great. I have some benchmarks below.

anything with a 5650 and a multi core cpu will be good. My buddy got one from Acer and has yet to be able to play anything on max.

The only reason you'd need a fancy smancy video card is if you plan on outputting to a bigger monitor. Otherwise a 5650 will be more than enough (he played batman on high with 30-40fps)

I normally hate Acer but this one is very well built. It's very sturdy, it doesn't creek like most toshiba's and dells when you press on the plastic. The heat is very well disappated. It's all in all just very well built, even I like it. And it'll save you 100 bucks to go buy a new mouse or something.

overkill much? for a laptop? What would be the use of a 5850 on that size monitor. It's overkill and useless heat unless theres plans for external monitor.

Size of the LCD doesn't matter when playing games. Resolution does.

Also that HD 5650 on the acer wouldn't play batman on all high settings unless you were using some low resolution laptop screen.
Ever seen games on a 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 15"-17" screen? Way better then on a 1366x768 at high settings that's for sure, there's barely any details at that low of resolution.

Add to the fact coming games will only get more and more resource hungry.

5770, not 5850... and it is underclocked 150MHz although I do OC mine back somewhat. Also there is nothing wrong with overkill, there is nothing wrong with maxing almost every game and two years from now is a long time for a Mobility HD5650 to hold up. A Mobility HD5650 isn't even as good as my last gaming laptop's GPU. [a 9800m GTS 1GB].

His resolution isn't low nor was the detail. Games are only getting more resource hungry because developers are getting lazier with their ports. Sad but true story. I'm sorry but theres yet to be a game out that even looks as good to crysis, of which I can run on almost max details on my sig system, but yet theres games that require more resources to run than that and run horrible? Proof, lazy devs at code optimizaitons.

Well my point being is you were recommending something super expensive for someone on a budget, which happens too much on this forum. Someone gives a price point and people always ignore it and go hundreds over budget because it's what they got. I wasn't intending to flame or sound rude so with that my apologies.

I really only went $25 over your absolute max and I only looked it up because they were going for $870 earlier. I recommended it because what they'd be getting from the G73 is easily worth the difference from a price/performance perspective. For what it is, the extra cost would be money well spent.

...and I didn't take any offense.

Nice laptop. The 335 won't do 1080p for much more than movies, but it looks solid for media. I wonder what it's frequency performance on the speakers is like. The G73 has a small sub woofer on the bottom, which is absent on this N90, but that doesn't matter if the speakers on the N90 are that much better. Also, I hope it comes with a good case, because it isn't going to fit any normal laptop case.
