File Server Thoughts

Thread Starter
I decided to throw together a dedicated file server from old and new parts. Here's as follows. As of right now I have no RAID. JBOD setup.

CASE: Antec Three Hundred - $59.95
MOBO/CPU combo: Asus P5GZ-MX with E6320 - $51.33
RAM: G.SKill DDR2-800 2GB - $34.00
GENERIC SATA DVD-ROM Drive - $19.99
VIDEO: Onboard
SOUND: Onboard
NIC: Onboard
OS Drive: IDE 160gb
2nd Drive: IDE 160gb
3rd Drive: Samsung F4 2TB $99.99
PSU: Antec BP550 Plus 550W $64.99
OS Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

$330.25 total.. add shipping and total cost was about in the $350 range.

Any thoughts? Should I use 64-bit Vista instead of 32-bit with only 2gb ram? This mobo only supports 2GB max.

I wouldn't use Vista at all with only 2GB RAM.

If it's purely a file server then it doesn't really matter which OS your use, or how much RAM you have though...

Well I currently only have licenses for Windows 2000 pro or Windows Vista. I'm not too familiar with Linux or I'd go that route.

Noooooooo JBOD
Get 3 decent drives in RAID 5 if you actually care about your data.

+1

10.10 came out not too long ago. there are so many forums available that linux is actually becoming very easy to implement and use. as 10.10 stands, you should be able to burn the free ISO to a CDR and install it the same way you would with windows. from there its, google what you want to do. someone has already asked the question, and someone has answered it. if it becomes too problematic, you can always go back to windows.

It's not that hard at all to set up a Linux file server. Ubuntu has a Samba "wizard" ... a GUI utility that configures Samba (aka windows) shares without having to edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf file manually. Works great.

After you install, you should be able to get it up and going in 10 minutes. It's quite simple. May even be easier than Vista since you won't have to update the operating system for 4 days and mess around with Windows firewall.

If you have a license for 2k pro, use this if windows is key to you.
It's almost like XP...almost...(No RDP for 2000, though)
And like someone said earlier...get descent RAID level SW or HW.
lot of easy software to use for 2000/XP as server (freeware also)

If you don't need Windows, try the ubunt 10.10 route...
But if you are new to linux, get the desktop edition...(or keep google ready to search).
