Best Upgrade from Sennheiser HD555

As stated, I have a pair of HD555s that I want to improve. I'm going to be picking up a DAC shortly (probably the DAC WOW from hotaudio, Optical version), and wanted some opinions.

However, because everybody has different preferences, I'll let you know mine.

I want more bass, and for the music to sound more real. I suppose you could say I want a more encompassing soundstage.

My first inclination was to save for a pair of HD650s, which can be had for a good price on ebay. However, I read about something called the 'Sennheiser Veil', which means that with that pair, for whatever reason, vocals seem to be coming from another room.

I listen to everything, but lean toward electronic (Deadmau5, Pendulum) and alternative of various forms (Jimmy Eat World, Alkaline Trio, The Killers, Coldplay). Sometimes I'll listen to Eminem, for the lols or just 'cause I'm in the mood for that. I'll occasionally go for something harder, like Rise Against.

I generally like the sound of my Monster IEMs (listed in sig), but I don't like the closeness of the sound. I want my music to sound more real and surrounding, rather than coming from inside my head.

I like my 555s in that they are open and thus more speaker-like than other headphones, and they are very comfortable.

Knowing that, does anybody have any thoughts or suggestions? I'd be running the DAC to my soundcard and then the headphones to that (the E5 can drive cans up to 300ohms, or so I've read, so I should be good on that front until I do another upgrade later on).

If you can, try the HD650's before you buy - I know what people mean when they talk about the Sennheiser Veil but it's not really as obvious as people would make out, nor is it necessarily a bad thing, I know my HD600 has this characteristic but I still love the sound of them (and I've heard better headphones).

In order for people to give good recommendations you need to state a budget for the headphones.

A lot of people recommend the Beyerdynamic DT800 (600 Ohm - they come in a 250 Ohm version too) over the Sennheiser HD600 so they might be worth looking at.

Thanks for confirming the veil. Unfortunately, there's not really a way to try before I buy, as the best I've seen in my local stores are the HD280 PROs (in a local musical instrument/equipment store called Kenelly Keys).

Besides that, it's Best Buy or nothing, and they just have the mainstream, such as the Beats by Dr. Dre.

I don't know many people personally into high end audio, which is unfortunate, especially in cases like this.

TL;DR: I can't try before I buy. :I

Anyway, I'll check out the Beyer's, see if they're any cheaper or have better reviews in comparison. Thanks for the reccomendation, rep for you kind sir. :3

PS: My budget would be under $300 if possible. I'll wait if there's something worth doing so for, but I'm not going for the HD800 here. XD
