are energy RC 50's good enough to pair with a velodyne DD 18?

i just got a new sub equivalent to a velodyne DD 18. i made a post about it so to save me trouble, ill quote my post.

DD18Mxlg_9.jpg

that's velodyne's new model. i could literally call velodyne and trade my old 20 year old ULD 18 and get a huge discount on one of those because of it. they have the same exact specs aside from mine is a bigger cabinet, and the parts inside are bigger. it's the same exact servo circuit and everything, same SPL at every frequency range.

took that out of the pic setup thread, but still, same pics.

so i must admit after hearing this thing for a while, i have never heard a sub this good in my life, ever. it hits deeper than anything ive ever heard, but more importantly, the sound quality coming from it ust RAPES any subwoofer ive ever heard. i'm sure theres better, for thousands of dollars. this cost me $200. someone show me a $200 better sub please. it bottoms out at 13 htz. at 20 htz it gets up to 104db with .5% distortion, ive heard it myself and believe velodyne's claims. i'm curious what others thing of me nabbing this. also, my friend's dad was THE service center for velodyne and pretty much for bang and olufson at one point. he's the one who sold me this. this sub was the actual sub driver and amp that the other ULD 18's were specced after and calibrated to. i thought that was pretty cool.

one thing that's really weird to me is if i really start pushing this thing, a few thigns happen, my house starts falling apart, it starts popping and turning off, applying the servo break. the weird thing about the house falling apart from it is, my drywalls start moving, my windows start rattling, but there is almost no exursion on the woofer, i cant feel it that hard in my chest but definately can. but ive had my friends ghetto rap 10 inch subs in his car hit me WAY harder than that, but they sound like garbage. but the weird thing is his 10 inch subs wouldnt do much to the structure of his car, this velodyne really would. about the servo. i'm pretty sure the buzzing on my NAD T751 is messing with the servo and making it think it's extra distortion to apply the breaks so the voice coil wont get messed up. it's popping and turning off not even getting pushed half as hard as it could and was at my friends house with no issues. this is just a thoery though.it's not a huge deal because it can go loud enough for my comfort by far.

i thought it was broken for a while when my friend played some hardcore dubstep on it, it was raping my house too lol.

also, anyone have any reccomendations for quality bass to test this thing out with?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsYcRSNL8To

that was pretty good to test it. the big drums are crazy when you have a high quality version.

Energy-RC-50-3-Way-Floorstanding-Speaker-Rosenut-Veneer-0.jpg

so basically, are those floorstanders good enough for that sub? how will they sound compared to my bx5a's? my bx5a's are seriously overpowered by my sub. i'm thinking of using the bx5a's as rear speakers. also, will my NAD T751 receiver power it well enough? if not then i'm building my own quad 405 amplifier with 5 channels soon anyway. i DO NOT CARE that my room is too small for it, i can deal with that and that only means it will sound better when i get a bigger room. alot better. i'm talking about with a room 5 times the size of mine, how would that setup sound assuming i have a center channel that can keep up?

also, how would black ash look? all the black ashes ive seen on speakers suck. could i get the rosenutveneer from that link somehow?

RC-50 will blow away the BX5a back to the stone ages. I suppose that's the most pithy way of saying it biggrin.gif.

I honestly would just sell those BX5as and get yourself some rear or side pro monitors, preferably from Energy.

If you've got a good sub then getting floorstanders is not really cost effective, you'd be better off spending the same amount of money on better standmounts (they're always cheaper than the floorstanding equivalent) just don't forget to factor in the cost of stands. If you like those speakers then just buy the standmount model, they'll sound the same but just less bass extension (which your sub covers)

On a different note, if your sub is drowning out your monitors then it might just be set too loud or the crossover might not be optimal.

exactly how good are the rc50's? how would they sound compaired to some of these?

im just curious how it would stack up against those. also, can they keep up with my velodyne ULD 18, which is just as good as a $3000+ subwoofer today?

well this sub gets 104 db at 20htz, with .5% distortion lol. the quality difference is huge alone, but it prolly is set too high.

i really do want big floorstanders for bigger sounding sound sometime soon. i do not plan on being in that small room forever.

so basically, you're saying that those energy RC 50's are not worth it to pair with my velodyne ULD 18 and wont sound much better than my bx5a's?

Nope, that's not what I'm trying to say tongue.gif

I mean the same speaker, take my Quad 12L2 for instance, it's the same speaker as the Quad 21L2, the 21L2 just has a larger cabinet size and therefore deeper bass. I've heard both and they sound identical apart from the deeper bass of the floorstanding model.

What I'm saying is, why pay for the deeper bass extension when your sub covers the bass anyway? You might as well get the smaller speaker and the same sound for less money.

I was comparing the RC-50 to whatever it's standmount counterpart is, I wasn't comparing it to any other brand/model - I've never heard those speakers or any of those you've posted above so I can't comment on them specifically.

it's personal preference i guess. imo floorstanders just blend better due to larger cabinet size. in a really big room, i'm THINKING it will sound awesome with my uld 18. that and the wow factor. but you are right, i'm sure the bookshelf version probably goes down to mid 50 htz, the floorstanders go to 30 htz, and you are probably right. sound below 80htz or so isnt even directional...but, it does save me the trouble of good floor stands and they WILL sound bigger, and i do want that. for example, ive heard my friend's psb image 4t's and the 1b bookshelfs sepeately for music with his velodyne 12 inch 800w sub on. the image 4t's actually seemed to blend with the sub better and filled the room more than his little bookshelves, even though on paper, it shouldnt i guess. that might have to do with having more surface area with multiple drivers though.

I'm thinking i will have my left and right channel speakers floorstanding no matter what, my center will either be another floor stander later on or maybe a legit center channel. i can use the bx5a's as rears for a while until i find better.

oh and i'm impressed with them getting 35 htz out of ONE 6.5 inch woofer. but look, there are two woofers on the rc50's vs one in a bookshelf. that creates more surface area to move air with, making them more efficient and have the capability for more power handling which can be used for huge rooms. that is damned impressive btw. quad makes good stuff, but that is way too pricy for me, HOWEVER... i WILL be building a quad 405 ampilifer which is 5 channels soon to power those rc 50's i will probably get, the center channel, and rears.

btw i REALLY want the rosenut or the cherry. is that amazon link ONLY black ash? because i think the veneer on the black ash will be garbage. if i can only get back ash then i'm going to poly it myself. if anyone minds, can you help me find rosenut or cherry in the same price?

or i might just peel off the veneer, then sand it and see what i can do to round the corners, prime it, paint it very speckly metallic grey, put a matallic silver logo of mine on it somewhere, then put many coats of polished poly on it to match when i'm going to do with my velodyne ULD 18.
