Buzzing noise with XFX 6970

I just installed my new XFX 6970 to replace my GTX 470. The first thing I notice is a buzzing noise when running 3D applications (the noise is not coming from the fan). The more graphic intense the game/program is the louder the noise is. In 3d Mark 2011 and UniEngine DX11 I'll even get some shutters for a few sec as the noise gets louder.

After doing some research it appears that the comes from the coil of the video. One of the fix I found is changing power supply. My PS is a Arctic Cooling 650W. I'll admit my power supply isn't exactly new but I haven't any problem until now.

I'm just wondering if I should RMA the card or is the power supply my problem at this point.

Same thing happened to me when I got my second 5850. I replaced my power supply even though my 750watt should have been fine, and it works like a champ now.

It's either the PSU, a faulty fan, or a capacitor making noise under load. It's most likely a capacitor. Nothing you can do. Just put headphones on or crank the speakers up. It's very normal to get such a sound. Some cards do it and some don't.

Use an empty roll of paper towel or toilet paper to isolate the source of the sound.

If it is the PSU, it is simply buckling under load and you have revealed a defect. Needs to be RMA'd.

Well ordered a Corsair AX850W power supply, hopefully this will solve the problem, if not I will be RMAing the 6970. Thanks for the suggestions.

I had the same problem with my first 5850. Since I didn't witness the problem with my previous card, it could've only been the 5850 so, I sold it.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my 6950 unlock shaders. I have coolermaster 550w PSU. The card is overclock it up to 940-950 at 1.2v. I hear the screaching sound on heaven and 3dmark06 but constantly crashes at 950 core. Do you think my PSU have enough wats to support the 6950 at that clock?

High pitch occur only on loading screen. 3Dmark06 and Crysis.


550 wats is recommended for a 6970...
