Best CPU Upgrade From Q9550?

Thread Starter
I'm currently running a Q9550, but it's starting to show its age. I'm looking to upgrade, but I'm unsure what would be the best route.

Newegg currently has the Phenom II X4 965 for $160. I'm not really sure though if that would be my best move. Would it be worth it to get an X6? I'm also looking at the i5 760 which is currently $209 on Newegg.

I'm really lost as to what my best option would be. I'm not huge on OC'ing (lack of knowledge on the subject/the ability to ruin something scares me). Is it even worth going to an i5 or am I better off waiting a bit longer and saving some more cash to get an i7?

None of the ones you listed would be a significant upgrade.

I suggest you try overclocking (this is overclock.net after all) because the Q9550 still has a ton of life in it.

Yup. The PhenomIIs can barely compete with the Core2Quads.

A real upgrade would bean 1155 SandyBridge or a cheap 1366. Microcenter has i7 950 for $200 in store tomorrow.

The other problem with OC'ing, aside from the lack of knowledge on the subject, is the fact that my chip is a C1 revision, which I'm told is a bad OC'er. Also, despite my cooler, my CPU idles at like 44C (I've tried reapplying thermal paste plenty of times but nothing changes).

I've tried following guides for OC'ing but I'm still worried I'll screw something up.

Phenom II X4 965 wouldn't be upgrade more like 2-3 percent boost over your current cpu you probably won't notice any difference between them. Q9550 is not outdated yet its still decent cpu you can always overclock it.

Your best move would be waiting for Sandy Bridge (LGA 1155).

Are there any like step-by-step walkthroughs I can follow for OC'ing? The only guides I've seen have been very vague on the subject.

Your best bet for an upgrade is to hold onto what you have for a while and see what Bulldozer has to offer. Other than that I would wait till Sandy Bridge.
