Going i7, Need Suggestions

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
I'm looking at slowing go i7, but I don't wanna lose an arm and a leg in the process. So I'm hoping to spend no more than $600 dollars on RAM, CPU and Mobo. I've always had good history with EVGA so I'm hoping to go with one of their boards if all possible.

Are you anywhere near a Micro Center? They have i7 950's for 200 dollars so I'd hop on that if you can. The board I would go for the Gigabyte UD3R or the Asus P6X58D-E. Both are nice boards, but I'd let you to that. The RAM, I'd go for Mushkin Enhanced Redlines. 1600MHz at CAS 6 is very nice.

Also Fry's for one day only tomorrow will have the i7-950 for $199,I know you mentioned EVGA but a Asus Sabertooth is a great board for the price at $199 and right now since RAM is cheap you can have your pick of 6,8 or even 12GB for under $200.

i7 950 + EVGA FTW3 = $529.99

Ripjaws = $52.99

Plus that combo has a $30 rebate.

Want i7 on the cheap?
Go 1156! You can get an i7 875k, an EVGA P55 SLI and 4gb of Ripjaws RAM for $400 flat.

Well I'm looking for power, but don't wanna cut corners. I'm going to be folding on the CPU and hoping to pull out some massive points.

How much difference is the 1156 and the 1366?

Negligible.
You "sacrifice" triple channel RAM for dual channel, and there's just less pcie lanes.
