Need help installing new Western Digital 1 TB HDD

Thread Starter
I Need help installing new Western Digital 1 TB HDD SATA II Drive without disturbing existing drives.

I am using a GigaByte UD3P Motherboard.

All drives currently installed:
DRIVE C:CRUCIAL_CT128M225 SSD DRIVE 128 GB [ BOOT Drive ]
DRIVE D:Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320620320 GB 7200 RPM16 MB
DRIVE F:Maxtor 6L080P0 ATA Device DiamondMax 10 80 GB <--IDE DRIVE
DRIVE H:Seagate USB External HDD 250 GB <-- USB

The NEW HDD is a 'Western Digital WD1001FALS 1TB' 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 2 Internal

The section I am reading from can be found here---> http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...d=3012&dl=1#sp

START MANUAL SECTION
"Storage InterfaceSouth Bridge:
1. 6x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATA2_0, SATA2_1, SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA2_5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
2. Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10
GIGABYTE SATA2 chip:
1. 1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices
2. 2 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (GSATA2_0, GSATA2_1) supporting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
3. Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD
END OF MANUAL SECTION

Questions:
I need to know if I can simply put this newest SATA II drive to any unused SATA 2 cable?
Do I have to remove a drive?
Is there a max drives supported limit?
Here is the list of drives already in the Box.

NEW DRIVE Stats
Western Digital WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 2 Internal Drive
I want to make this 1 TB drive as either drive D or F?

I want to keep all 4+1 drives though.
Easy, hard to do?, requires advanced degrees?
help?

If you have an open port in your case to mount the drive and an open SATA port (+ cablE) on your board, you're good to go.

You might need to go into disk management to manually move around the drive letters to your liking.
Start -> diskmgmt.msc

^ you'll likely need to go there once the drive is installed in order to partition and format the drive for use.

Simply mount the drive and plug it into a empty sata port. Boot up the pc into windows. And you see it finding the new drive. Next do this.
1) Open control panel.
2) Open administrative tools.
3) Open computer management.
4) Click disk management.
5) Look for the drive in the list.
6) Right click the drive and select create a new simple volume.
7) it will then format it and create a usable drive for you.

Lazy way to get to disk management:
Click Start > Run\\search and type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.

Good deal and let us know that happens. I'm thinking about breaking my two f3's out of raid-0. As i can't even put a dent in those drives in storage. So backing it up with acronis as i type this out. Plus that will allow me to go from 4 drives to two also.

HOLD Up a sec...

based on this...
DRIVE C: CRUCIAL_CT128M225 SSD DRIVE 128 GB [ BOOT Drive ]
DRIVE D: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320620 320 GB 7200 RPM 16 MB
DRIVE F: Maxtor 6L080P0 ATA Device DiamondMax 10 80 GB <--IDE DRIVE
DRIVE H: Seagate USB External HDD 250 GB <-- USB

Can I MOVE current Drive D: to drive E: position AND make sure the new TeraByte drive goes into drive D slot?

I hope that made sense..

thanks

can't you just go into disk management and assign the D Drive to the E drive slot and vice versa?

You can change the drive letter after you get everything set up. Or you can unplug that one and plug the new drive in that ones place. And after you are done setting up the new drive plug back in the seagate. so you have a few options depending on what is easier for you to do.

As stated, you can assign whatever drive letter you want to your devices as such:
