Galaxy S Captivate Opinions?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I am looking to get a new phone tomorrow. I am really interested in the Galaxy S Captivate and was wondering what some opinions of the phone were? I have not had a smartphone before so i was hoping that i would enjoy this one a lot. I am a little bit skeptical on getting it as i have to lock into a 3 year term with rogers (up here in Canada) as i am just with a company right now where i can exit anytime pretty much (just a small fee to do so). Couple of questions...

1) How is the battery life? Any apps to improve it and if so is it a big improvement?

2) The only other smartphones i have used are an iphone 3GS and a couple blackberrys. Anybody able to tell me how they compare?

3) How is the texting? This will be the deal breaker for me if it is not up to par. Does it show the whole convo when receiving and sending texts?

4) How are the apps? Comparable to the Iphone's?

I have done quite a bit of research and even searched through OCN but still had these questions. Sorry for the long post but thanks to anyone who replies!

My brother has it. I recommended it for him.

1. Not sure. I don't own it. But battery life depends on many different things like brightness etc. Check out this thread I just found on Google. Here.

2. I own a Blackberry. I have for the past few years but always trying out the latest iPhone. I have to say that if it had Push Email like the Blackberry did. I'd be sold. I really enjoy the phone, the screen is amazing.

3. I played around in the messaging trying out the keyboard. I have to say, it's nicer than the iPhone. Both in landscape and in portrait mode. I really had a problem with the landscape mode on the iPhone. But no issues here. The screen is bigger than the iPhone too so the keys aren't as cramped.

4. To be honest, I like the app selection. Angry Birds is free on the Captivate, which wasn't the case when I owned the iPhone. I liked it. But you will find most of the apps you do on the iPhone, also on the Android phone.

1. Battery life is good for an Android, though expect to charge every day. The screen is the number one killer.

2. Only used Android phones so can't say.

3. The Captivate comes with Swype. Swype is the fastest keyboard around. Awesome for texting. And yes it does display the whole thread.

4. There are more than enough apps on Android Market. You can find an app to do anything.

I'm due for an upgrade and The Captivate is the phone I was going to get.
However many people told me to wait until january, because a bunch of new phones will be launched after CES.

Eh. They were semi-right.
They won't be launched... They will be announced. wink.gif You'll have to wait till maybe late Q1, early Q2 to see the phones.

Thanks for all the replies. I am not one to wait for new phones, but instead look for a deal and the captivate is on sale right now so it looks like i am going to go with that if the plan is right. Thanks again!

remember to grab this free app called screen filter

lowers the brightness to below the settings you can use on Android

it really saves battery on the Captivate biggrin.gif
