there are several free backup utilities. The one I use in particular is Macrium Reflect Free.

It does not restore images to RAID in the free version though, which is fine cause I dont use RAID for my OS. Once i get all my apps installed and Rainmeter setup the way I like, just create an image and store it on an external/secondary HD.

edit: i've spent too much time customizing Rainmeter skins to my liking to just have them wiped out. and with images you save a ton of time over installing apps one by one and installing drivers.

You only need to re-format your hard drive once (usually after a retail purchase or new build) or when your system is infected and prevents a successful boot of your OS. You can automate a lot of the "cleaning" programs to do most of the work. The rest is up to you.

Then again, I have OCD.

so basically after installing a fresh copy of Windows I can use my previous image and will it automatically activate the new Windows and everything? Also, it won't slow down "loading" a old OS onto a new one?

Wow people do this way more common then I thought.. I've been with the same install for about 5-6 months (dont remember when I got my computer) but i've been on the same first install, but have been thinking about reformatting recently. This thread basically gave me the decision to reformat

Automatic defrags and regular CCleaner usage keeps my install pretty clean so I usually reformat three times a year or so.

No need to keep reformatting if you regularly run CCleaner, keep the registry error-free, defragment, etc.

I do about twice a year at the most, though. Runs just as responsive and speedy as the day I installed the OS, 8 months ago.

I'm not really sure why everybody does a "backup" on documents. I have my documents located on my secondary hard drive, so when i reinstall all i have to do is right click my picture, my music, ect. and point them towards the folder on the secondary drive, take a whole minute to do that instead of having to transfer files.\\

I do mine at least once a year. My first install of windows 7 was on my computer for about a year before i wiped it. I just reinstalled a few weeks ago.

It all a matter of personal preference. I usually do it every 3 months. I have most of my Doc's on a separate PC and just access them through the network. That witha Slipstreamed install CD whittles the process down to around 2 hours.
