460's are notorious for being incredibly cool...whether reference or custom. Not sure where you heard otherwise. Every review on every site on the history of the internet will confirm this. There are no heat issues from any 460 card at all.

but if u would have seen the link given in my post u will see that gtx 460 has the highest gains from overclocking and can beat overclocked hd6850 and compete head to head with hd 6870/hd5850...
and even beating hd6870/5850 at times.....

based on your monitor resolution the 5850 seems like the over best choice if you don't want to spend over $200, other then that 6870 all the way.

when did the gtx 460 become a tesselation powerhouse lol
post #16 of 83
^get ur facts correct im comparing gtx 460 with hd5850 and not saying that gtx 460 is the best for tesselation....
just try running the unigine benchmark with extremetesselation on both the cards and u will get a clear picture of what im saying.....
gtx 460 has 1 tesselation unit for every shader cluster which totals to 7 tesselation units.....lol

the bottom line is on today's standard both cards pretty much suck on tesselation. if you want a card with good tesselation get a gtx 480/580 or 6900 series. if new games had heavy tesselations both gtx 460 and 5850 would still suck anyway.

get the best performing card. id prolly get the 5850. if you have a crossfire board i'd lean towards a 6870 but you don't so a 5850 would be the best card for the money imo

The 5850 at stock averages more FPS than the 460 at stock, but the 460 overclocks better than the 5850 giving it more FPS. So if you overclock your graphics cards get the 460, or save for the 470

as u will see stock for stock both hd6850/6870 are faster than gtx 460 but once all these cards are overclocked to their max the gtx 460 takes the cake so for that budget get the gtx 460 hawk from msi and overclock the hell out of it then it will beat both hd 6870/6850 evn when they are overclocked...
for instance my card can reach 855 core without any increase in volts and is stable so the overclocking ability of the hawk is the highest among all gtx 460 variants......
Hmm I'm seeing the oc'd 6870 pummeling the 460 in games, especially with higher AA levels.
Am I missing something?

Tessellation performance in Heaven is pretty irrelevant with mid level and single gpu's.

You know it requires multiple highend cards to get "playable" frames in Heaven.
And with the exception of LP2 the 6870 is the clear winner in all DX11 games tested.

NiK_0_0 I would take the 6870 over the 460, but the 460 over the 5850.
You could always wait for the 560, should be within your budget.

but still the op dont have budget for those high end cards so for his budget gtx 460 provides overall good feature set+performance when compared to the hd5850
and the difference in tesselation performance on both cards is not minute but much more....
