Some "Stuff" with my 2 Evga 480's

Hey Gang!!
I don't get around here enough, probably September was the last time.
Anyway, I've been watching my Evga Vanilla 480's lately, just checking in on them to make sure they're running fine & cause I'm usually wearing my headphones while playing cause my wife is in the room.

Now, here's the stuff. First thing is..
Gpu #1 runs at 1.049V, Gpu #2 runs at 1.025V
This result is the same in Gpu-z, HW monitor, or any other onboard checking software and they stay the same even if I change slots on the mobo or plugs on my PSU. Then there's the temps, also un-even with Gpu #2 always running around 7c cooler, no matter where it's positiioned or how they're challenged.

Yes, both cards are clocked the same Vanilla 701/924/1401 Both running the same bios and everything, the only difference is I have the HF bracket on card #1, that was basically a waste for me as it didn't change the temps one bit, they still run exactly the same under the same condtions.
Now, I'm not complaining. I like it that one is cooler and how well they perform. I have Precision running with the games to keep temps below 89c and they always are. I'm just curious, is this unusual for the two of them to be running different voltages??

Next stuff.... Today I thought I'd clean everything out & move one card down to the bottom slot on my mobo & see how they run that way. I couldn't do it! I tried all kinds of tricks but no matter how I configured them, the one in the bottom slot ran, the fan was on, the heat pipes were warm but it didn't show up in Device manager or on any other software. Interesting bit here is, I've had 3 hard drives fail on me in as many months. I'm hoping no one says "maybe it's your mobo".

Someone did say maybe it's your PSU & while it's passed all the software exams I haven't got a multimeter yet to do the taste test with it. Seeing as most of my stuff has just passed the one year old point I'm really hoping none of the parts read the warranty periods & decided to quit. Not that it makes a difference with the GPU's cause they're for life.

So, help??

7C? That is actually not too bad. My old GTX 480 SLI setup were sandwiched together, and the top card would sometimes run 15-17C hotter than my bottom card.

The different voltages are normal. I'm not 100% sure of what you are asking, but fermi cards come with different stock voltages unlike the 2XX series cards and older. So one card having 1.025 and the other 1.049 is normal.

Regarding the PCIe slot issue... It could very well be the motherboard (I'm sadly not a fan of EVGA's motherboards) but I am assuming the second slot works correct?

Yep, that's what I wanted to know on that part. Thanks!!

I do know that I got 2 cards from the Egg, tested one for 2 weeks, then put in the second one, it was DOA so I RMA'ed it to the Egg per Evga instructions. Still running the original, the RMA came from the Egg in 3 days, they're just over the mountain. Popped in the second one & tested it, 2 weeks, then put the original in & it went bizarre, so RMA'ed that one direct to Evga, got it back in a week, popped it in for testing & it was what I'm now calling #2, & it's cooler, runs lower voltage & just seems like a happier card.

Always had me wondering if it was a test card for the 580 or something??

Ok, now I'm waiting to see if anyone has an idea why slot 3, aka pci-e #5 seems to be dead.

Ah, saw your add on. Yes, the second slot works perfect with no fiddling, truly plug & play from the start. Oh, I know it shouldn't make a difference but I'm using the 3 sli strap instead of the 2 position flexi-strip. Mine was busted & couldn't fine the wifes, same mobo but she has 1 5850.

Reinstall drivers and give that a whirl. No need to uninstall. Simply install the newer drivers in place of the old one.
