Sound System for HTPC ?

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm looking for a not too expensive sound system for my parents' HTPC. It's on an old lga775 mATX mobo so the sound card must be on PCI.

Also .. can I just buy the regular 5.1 sound system for PC of do i have to get the ones that are specified for Home theater ? because the ones for PC are like a lot cheaper ... :/

I was thinking of getting these with this card but I'm really not sure ... Also I have no idea if the rear speakers have cable that are long enough ...

My parents aren't audio freak but they do appreciate a good 5.1 system...

help please

-What are you looking for? A HTIB?
-Will this computer be setup with a smaller monitor in a side room, or will it be hooked up to the main entrainment center?
-Do your parents already have a receiver and speakers?
-What other sources will be hooked up as well (ex. game systems, DVD, VHS, cable box)

Please provide details (model numbers if possible) of all related gear.

You need to provide more information if you want some help in this matter.

other source thats gonna be hooked up are PS3, cable box and maybe a dvd player. we dont have a receiver.

Get a receiver. How else are you going to "switch" sources w/o a receiver nevermind all the other things a receiver can do/offer?

What's your budget?

I'd get one that can do audio pass thru hdmi (simpler cabling). I haven't been in the market for a receiver in a longtime but I reckon units from Onkyo/Yamaha will be a good start. I think the TX-SR508 is like 250 at Amazon and the 308 is 190.
