Strange sound problems with WMP

So my WMP is having some issues, mainly with playing DVD's it seems like. Some discs it plays just fine, and others it just plays the video but there is no sound. I thought it was a codec problem so I ran GSpot on the file and it said the audio codec is AC3 and it is already installed on my PC.

However I do get sound in VLC, and I suppose the easiest solution would be just to use VLC but I hate it when stuff doesn't work and then when I figure out it doesn't work I want to fix it...

So I still haven't been able to resolve this problem... short of reformatting and starting over fresh (which obviously isn't worth it, in that case I can live with using VLC) I have tried a lot to figure out what is wrong and I just can't put my finger on it.
