My dad bought a ridiculous sound system..

Hey guys,

So today being Boxing Day, my dad goes shopping, and brings home the Sony BDV-IZ1000W for $499. Personally, I think it's WAYY overpriced, even at 500$..

It's a 5.1, 1000W system, and the speakers are wireless. It has a Blu-Ray player too. (we already have a PS3, so the Blu-Ray player's redundant..)

The thing is, we live in a house, but we have tenants who live in the basement. Our living room is right above their living room, so the volume levels have to be kept relatively low, especially at night. so this means the subwoofer needs to be turned down as well..

Personally, i think something like a Logitech Z-5500 @ 300$ on sale would be able to match this expensive sony setup, especially at the volume levels we're going to be listening at. but what's your opinion on this?

(btw, i made him return the two $150 HDMI cables he bought. don't even ask...)

If he's not going to be able to use it then I see his purchase as pretty pointless. His money though, if he doesn't listen to your advice, don't get too upset. My parent's always buy stupid stuff and then ask me questions later.

Ugh, that reminds me of the $100 monster power strip my parents bought from bestbuy when they bought their TV. We can't let them go shopping alone!

I'm actually pretty sure the Sony HTIB can destroy the Z-5500 in terms on sound quality. Logitech speakers are that bad. Your dad could've bought a better system with that money though.

$500 is NOT expensive. That's dirt cheap for 5 speakers, let alone 5 speakers, a subwoofer, receiver, and a bluray player. $500 gets a PAIR of DECENT speakers if we're talking about quality audio.

As terrible as that setup is, it's probably worlds better than the Z5500s.

Pewpew said it well. This isn't even hi-fi, it is more of entry level home theater audio. Anything is better than logitech though.

Why does everyone show up to the Hi-Fi section to discuss their HTIB...

So the quality of this HT setup will sound better than the z5500s, at relatively low volumes? because we don't plan to increase the volume very high..

Next time have him take you shopping with him so you can make sure he doesn't buy anything stupid for his wallet like that HDMI cable for example lol.

Meh, doesn't bother me a bit. Just don't start comparing it to Bowers and Wilkins.

Regardless, I think just about anything coming out of a box or that was purchased at Best Buy should be discussed in the "Home Audio" sub-forum as opposed to the Hi-Fi sub-forum.

150 for 2 or each? either way that's insane, it's a shame that there's probably some people out there who payed that much and don't even know how great a deal they got...
