ok so i want to spend about $100 and i thought i could upgrade my sound and so i was looking at speakers but i felt like my monsoon 2.1 is still very good and that the VIA software is rubbish but, i dont know much about audio. so should i get a new sound card or speakers for the cleanest/best audio?

IMO those speakers don't deserve a sound card, and $100 for speakers isn't going to get you anything decent How much are you willing to spend?

Actually he can get a decent sound card for under 100, theres a couple of them, Xonar DS and Xonar DG both are under 100. Xonar DS has a op-amp socket, while Xonar DG has a decent headphone amp.

a refurbish Forte goes for under 100 at auzentech reb store, so does bravura if they have any in stock.

If he do go over 100 for a sound card then Xonar STX goes for 179 at jr.com, X-merdian 2G goes for 150 if its in stock yet.

I suggest he get the sound card first then the speakers That way he can get the speakers when he can. instead of trying to get both at the same time.

I think the opposite would be better honestly.. sure he can get a decent sound card but if he doesn't have decent speakers to take advantage of it then what's the point? Upgrading the speakers first would be a more noticeable upgrade. But as I said $100 isn't enough for at least a decent speaker setup, so it's up to the OP what route is easier

Either way he'll be upgrading one or the other down the line so it doesn't matter. Might as well save for both.

for $100 you probably won't find a speaker setup that will justify replacing your current 2.1 monsoon.

I'd go with a dedicated sound card to improve the quality of your 2.1 system.
