is hd 6850 the best choice here?

Thread Starter
hi guys i currently have this system configuration..

e6600 @3.0ghz
Asus mobo with one PCI Express x16 (not 2.0)
ram 1x2gb kingston@833mhz
450w power supply (no gpu additional connector)
320gb 7200rpm sata hdd
one cd/dvd reader/writer
no additional stuff..

i need to know the following, if i get a hd 6850
is the power supply gonna still offer the required Wattage when the system on full load?
is the PCI Express x16 gonna bottleneck a hd 6850?
is the cpu@3.0ghz gonna limit hd 6850 potential?

what about an hd 5850 i know it has more performance but it also requires more power, so is 450w enough for the system with hd5850 ?

note that the max resolution that i will be able to play at is 1080p, other times at SXGA
and also im not planning on changing anything.. if the card is too good for this system im considering buying a weaker/cheaper one..

merry xmas.

Is that 450W real power? Or is it the PSU label? Generally what Exactly is your PSU?

For a single card mobo I'd recommend the HD5850/5870. Way better if you're not CFing.

No, the PCI-e will not bottleneck, x16 is the max bandwidth for any PCI-e
As for the CPU, yes, some bottlenecks may occur in more CPU-demanding games

EDIT: THe power difference between 5850 and 6850 is minimal

Bad. You might need a new PSU before you get the new GPU. Just to avoid the risk. A mid-priced no-brand 600W would be perfect.

Or you could carry on with this one, especially if it's a good brand I'm using the more power-demanding 4870 on a 500W, which is a bit of a stretch, with almost the same specs- low power CPU, just 2 sticks of RAM, 1 HDD, 1 BluRay.
So it *could* work. But no guarentee.

waiting on the details Cheers!

The best choice for what? What are you doing?

My 6850 can put out 4 megapixels/frame in games at the expense of some AA. Great little card that only need 130W or so of juice. You'd be hard pressed to find a similar performing GPU that uses so little wattage.

No that is load. That chart you link to is complete system usage at the outlet--not just the card. See:

so are you saying that if my psu can offer 300w total real power an hd 6850 should be fine?
what about the performance with e6600 @3.0ghz at 1080p and sxga

It will NOT be fine

http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

With your specs, PSUCalculator says your system needs at least 312W @load with 6850.
(That's considering the CPU OC)
