Well if you get one of the chips that unlocks you'll essentially have a Phenom II.

Well that would be nice, however I don't think I'd get lucky...however, what one would I have the best chance with...and assuming I fail, what one would be the most competitive to the Phenom II then. (Hope they are the same CPU)

Drop the phenom X4 from ur expensive list, and sub it for this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103846
You wont really need the extra 2 cores, plus there is a 75% chance that this proc will UNLOCK to a quad core thus saving you 70 bucks and still reciaving the same exact thing.

Okay, now thats 3.2 x 2 whilst the other is 3.1 x 3 and chances of unlocking a 4th....the Athlon there seems more promising. So which CPU should I go for here? And what motherboard will have the chance of unlocking that? I assume the Asrock 870iCafe will?
You can listen to the guy up there that says "75% will unlock" all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that you'll be stuck with whatever you buy if it doesn't. Unlocking isn't something you should expect from a processor when buying it. You need to decide which processor you'd be most happy with if, worst case scenerio, it doesn't unlock.
There are multiple reviews that give you an idea of what to expect from any of the processors mentioned in this thread, but you should know that your choice of video card is critical in deciding which games you will be able to play, or more importantly not. Put simply a Phenom II X4 with a HD4670 isn't going to cut it. I would suggest going with nothing less than a HD5770 and if that means you can't have your extra core and 6MB of L3 cache then so be it. At this budget you can't have the best of everything, you're going to have to skimp somewhere and if you skimp in the wrong place you won't be playing any games at all.

I wouldn't recommend running an x6 or any 125W processor/potential 125W processor (unlocked x2's count) with any board that has a 4+1 power phase/no heatsinks or worse, less. You're asking for flame death by doing so.

Okay...athlon it is gentlemen! Now...should I go 4 cores in hopes of making up for L3 or just that 3.1 Rana x3 Core you suggested earlier?

Also, a 5770 or a Geforce 460? The 5770 has a gig of ram, where the 460 has 768. I would assume the 5770 over the 460, just want to make sure? It's also about 30 bucks cheaper....

I believe that 2 cores, 3 cores, or 4 cores, it's all the same unless your intended usage can take advantage of those cores. My sig rig feels just as fast as the x6 1055T ... until overclocking... then the Core2Duo murders the 6 core. Why? Because the application of my main focus (Rhino CAD + TSplines) mostly uses only a single core. Even when the x6 was 3.6, 3.7GHz, I compared it to a 560BE x2 on the same board... it would overclock juuuust barely to 3.9. C2D at 3.9 feels faster than the AMD PhII x2 at the same speed.

Now, when the purpose of the computer shifts to Folding, the x6 crushes the C2D. AND... the 560BE unlocks to 4 cores. It wasn't stable with much overclock, so now it is folding too (see the HFM stats and my F1/F3 rigs) and it, too, crushes the C2D at folding. But that's ok... C2D is for the CAD.

Anecdotally, if anyone remembers when I was working on all that, "they" have improved on the software (both people, Rhino and TSplines) and it uses more then 2G of RAM and it flirts with going over a core of cpu.

I understand a lot of software does not opt for multiple cores, however...games are getting pretty intense, and for example the new black ops game minimum requirements are a Pentium Dual Core E6500 2.93GHz or Athlon II X2 260...I'd say a year from now that will be a triple core amd CPU, and likely a 3.2ish core 2 duo...which then I would either have a fair triple core cpu, like an athlon II, but it would not last the time I was hoping for.
