1 ssd + 1 hdd

Thread Starter
Hey,

I am going to buy G.Skill 120GB Phoenix Pro SSD as my OS drive and a 1TB drive for storage.

Can you tell me how they will function together? I have never had 2 drives before. Will I be able to move downloaded files and stuff like that from the OS drive to the other ome as if they were 2 partitions on 1 drive?

Will the storage drive work slower than if it was solo because it's not my main drive?

Basically, how will file transfers and spedd between the two drives work?

Thanks.

i have that setup now. it is esay. just insatll the OS on the SSD and once that is full or you want to save space just install programs/games onto HDD. have the SSD as the main drive will not affect the HDD speeds.

When I had just 1 SSD drive. I install the os, basic programs and the games I mostly play on the SSD and the rest on the 1TB hdd.

what drift said, there's nothing that could possibly go wrong.

You install your OS, basic applications (office, photoshop, etc) on it. On your other HDD, you install the big files or you create symbolic links on the SSD to the files on the HDD.

Thats my method and it works great for games.

I currently have a 120 GB SSD and a 2 TB HDD .

I had the same setup and still do plus a RAID 1 array to go along with it. 120 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD for games and a RAID 1 array for storage, all works great.

It's going to look the same as 2 partitions would.
There will be two drive letters in your "My Computer" (assuming each drive has 1 partition).

No HDD slowdown, there's no real 'primary' involved.

Transferring data, you simply drag and drop between the drives.
Speed should be good, it will max out the bandwidth of your mechanical drive.
Something such as ~100 MB/sec from HD to SSD and ~65-80 MB/sec from SSD to HD
