EDIT - Where's the poll?
Theres the problem with steam right there.

As a user of the steam service you do no own your games. Not even 1%. You give steam money to allow the game to be played at their convenience.

If your account is wrongly banned, like has happened in the past with my friends, you lose your games you paid for. If steam goes offline or the servers are borked, you don't get your games.

It's just a simple case of you don't own anything of the game. Steam does.

With that said, I use steam, but I don't buy games that cost more than 10 dollars at a time. Their download service blows dick and they can't even manage that alone with all the money they get.

Only thing I like about steam is the "friend community" and how easy it is to jump into games with friends, and the easy updates.

Compared to what Apple puts people through we've got it easy with Steam.

You can still play and use Steam in offline mode you know...You also would know, if you read any of the EULAs you get with physical media, that you don't "own" the physical copies either.

"You do not own your games" is somewhat true for ALL games, even ones bought on disc. While part of it is how you can move and exchange the software, legally it has always been this way.

Valve has mentioned that they've planned for contingency scenarios in which they can no longer support Steam, and would allow people to unlock their games. Unfortunately, I have to admit I'm not convinced this is still the case. On the bright side, in many games you get to view your CD key anyway, which is the valuable part of your purchase.

I actually have to agree about the wrongful-banning thing. When it's impossible to contest a ban, and they provide little information, I think it is quite literally IMPOSSIBLE that there aren't some certain number of innocent-bannings. I am careful with my own account and have had no issues yet, but the lingering possibility and stories from others always scare me.

The download service thing I'm not sure where you're coming from though. It could just be that the server closest to you sucks, which is truly their fault, but I'm willing to bet most people in this thread get VERY fast speeds, usually around their connection's max.

*Sigh* Apparently none of the Steam haters realize that Steam has an offline mode and you can play your games once downloaded without ever needing to be online. Also, talk about doomsayers, they think Steam could just suddenly disappear ANYTIME soon. Look at how profitable Steam is and you'll realize it's not going anywhere, anytime soon.

Steam is the best thing that's happened to PC Gaming in several years. There's a couple of minor things I'd tweak if I were in control of it but I wouldn't change much.

As much as I love steam, I'm here for the truth, not for Steam.

Offline mode sucks; it barely ever works, and not for more than a week at a time. Often, when trying to start offline mode, it will ironically ask you to connect to the internet to enable it. Plus, it will only allow you to play games you've played recently (ie, if you install a game, go on an airplane, then try to play it, it will deny you)

I certainly don't think Steam will go away soon either, but if we're looking 20 years into the future, it's not always so sure. Some people like ensuring these things are gonna last that long. And why not? Keeping supremely old games around is a pasttime of many gamers. Besides which, you don't know how the service is going to change, even if it doesn't go offline. For instance, the new UI update made Steam take up far more resources than most of its old SCUMM adventure games. Its minimum resolution is the entire size of my Eee PC's screen. Who knows what other dumb move they'll make next?

That's a price I willingly pay, but I see how it's a big problem for others.

I'm not interested in what the EULA says, It's garbage and I'll use it as toilet paper. I bought my physical copy of it and I'll do with it what I want. Sorry to say my clicking a check box doesn't authorize anything on their part nor would I care if it did. It's mine plain and simple. Doesn't mean im going to start copying it but what I will do is install it on as many computers as I want by any means possible. I'll even install it on a computer out in bangkok if I want to just in case I ever decide to live out there.

At least with my physical copies, I don't have anything hindering me or stopping me from playing my games unless the internet as a whole were to collapse and cease to exist. I take care of my disks as if they were family so no, them getting scratched or damaged will never happen.

Offline mode is irrelevant. How do you activate your game, and download the game when the steam servers are crapped out? How do you play your game if your account is wrongfully deactivated. I only keep bringing that up because it happened to 2 friends of mine. Valve made a huge mistake due to a bug in the VAC and had accounts banned. Took the weeks to get there accounts back to play games they spent money on.

I'm from IL and downloading from the chicago servers. I've been trying different locations all day but it goes even slower with them :\\ I'm only getting like 150KB/s and that's if the stupid steam service doesn't quit pausing my damn download. It's horrible service like this is why I won't buy games with steam protection on it or I won't pay full price for games through steam period.

I couldn't have said it any better myself.I got games on my shelf from the 90's that I own the physical copy of and I still reinstall games to this day. Without having to worry about stupid servers being online or not.
