$80 to spend towards upgrading what to get...

Thread Starter
So I really havent had the money to upgrade this year (kids grow so fast, I swear my son doesnt wear clothes more than once), I got some Christmas money, I spent $40 of it putting another 4gb of Ram in my machine. Now I am stuck

A new case?

Sound Card?

New Headphones?

better 2nd monitor?

Spend the $80 on a weapon of some sort and hold up Fry's for an SSD?

Oh and I put this in intel general because I am on an I7 and there is no General-General

Because I didnt really have a choice I traded my Phenom II 940, Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 and 8gb Kingston Hyperx to my brother for this board/cpu/ram combo about a year ago and this was what was in it. Frankly I dont know how much better it could possibly be. This combo already smokes the Phenom II

Basically I didnt feel like starting over on RAM, it already had 4gb in it, I could put $40 in and get another 4gb (which is what I chose) or start over and buy some awesome ram and end up putting twice that in. I just didnt see a point in starting over for minimal gains

This is true, and there really isn't that big of a difference in performance from dual channel to tripple channel (Im guessing you're running it in dual channel ) All I can say is put it away and save up for a SSD.

Not sure if you can do it but just get another single 2gb stick and throw it in. I believe it should run in triple channel automatically?? Not really sure about that.

Other then that you could get a black widow keyboard. Not sure if you're a fan of mechanical key boards or not. A nice sound card wouldn't be bad. I just ordered a ASUS Xonar DG for my headphones

I feel kind of like a dumbass, I am sort of RAMtarded I guess, I was always under the impression that ddr2 was dual and ddr3 was triple. Then i heard differently the last time someone harped on me for this ram. Now I am not really sure. In the book it said running 2 Dimm's (dual channel) go in slot A1 & B1. Every single other config said it would be running tripple channel. Currently I have dimm's in A1 and A2 as well as B1 and C1. Not even sure. I know most of the computer like the back of my hand, RAM...still havent figured it out, even after 2 years now

I would say save for an SSD, makes your system a hell of a lot faster overall. The Microcenter 64GB is only $100 and worth every cent.

I guess I could elaborate

A new case? I want a new case because my 900 is too cramped and looks like crap

Sound Card? I bought some cool new headphones a few months back but I think my onboard is letting me down

New Headphones? My headphones while cool, are not top notch but I think it might be pointless without a new sound card

better 2nd monitor? This is just because I love real estate

My only issue with getting an SSD is I would want to buy a copy of windows 7, since I dont want to go through the ehem...process...of reinstalling my current copy. Anyone know how student copies of windows work? My brother and his wife are in school, make them useful
