I know its overkill but its only $30 new (local sale) no tax/shipping so I can't get much cheaper than that.

But if you have all your movies currently stored on either disk or a main computer, a Playstation 3 makes a great HTPC. Blu-Ray player and surround sound capable, use Playstation Media Server allows you to watch any file type on the PS3 streaming from your main computer and the ability to exapnd the hard drive if you really want to store things on it.

I was trying to piece together a cheap HTPC ealier this year and someone recommended the PS3, and at first I thought it was a joke and wouldnt work or be worth it, but I eventually decided it really was the best choice.
My movies are stored in .iso format so I don't think a PS3 will work. Plus, a PC is cheaper for me than buying a new PS3.

If im not mistaken the ps3 can play the iso files. If not the extracted folders from the .iso file play perfectly.Thats how i use my ps3 although its not my htpc lol.

ive got a used xfx 9300 micro atx mobo with a intel e2140 cpu that would be perfect for a htpc. built in video nvidia9300 it will play blu-ray and gaming. $80 + shiping
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813141015

also like people are telling you the psu is to big, look at some good psu corsair 400watt or antec 430watt.

look for used parts, ask if there any warranty left on the part and save money, but buy a new case and psu.

Try to find a GPU that does not require a 6 pin PCI-e plug. Don't limit yourself to Nvidia, ATI really is the better choice for HTPC's.
+1. The 8800 GT is a bad fit for HTPC's. It doesn't support full hardware decode of the 3 Blu-ray codecs (VC-1, in particular, I believe). I'm not sure how much you're getting the CPU for but if it's going to cost around $50, I would recommend buying a brand new Celeron E3400 2.6 GHz instead. Heck, you can probably get used Pentium E5200's for cheap. Not only will it perform faster, it will also run cooler and have lower power consumption.

- I negotiated the LANBOX for free with the cpu, mobo & ram so I'm probably going to stick with that case for a bit.

- I chose the GPU because it was cheap ($30) and enables me to play games. What would you suggest instead of this?

- What do you not like about the PSU?
Get a good VGA cooler like the Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo Pro. that will keep the heat & the noise down.

Here's a cheap HTPC currently $125 - just add a nicer HDMI GPU.
