So two 6950s unlocked to 6970s for $590 > GTX580 SLI? - Page 12

Yet I'm deterred by the problems I'm having with Crossfire on my 4890's. It's been so long since they've started to say they'll come up with something. Everytime I get word of a driver in which it's supposedly been fixed I don't see a change in BC2.

No ... because what if the unlock actually damages the card to the point that it no longer works PERIOD ... with the 6970 bios on it? You'll never be able to remove it before you RMA because the card is dead. In fact, even if it completely died for any reason ... say, in 6 months time ...
you could run into this problem.

Actually, a 6-pin plug can pull just as much power as an 8-pin plug ... as long as, you know ... the wires don't catch fire from the excessive power draw. And that's pretty unlikely, frankly. I doubt that just having 2x6pin connectors rather than a 6pin + 8pin is going to impact max OC-ability.

I believe you have confused two benchmark charts from HardwareHeavens XFX 6970 & 6950s reviews of Eyefinity as proof that 6970 Crossfire is superior to 580 SLi in everyway. I would have to ask for the real proof now.

Also so that everyone knows, that original post is a complete and utter lie. That source was testing two store bought 6970s and not two 6950s that were unlocked. Its all available at HardwareHeaven.

And two GTX 570's run you ~$700. Just my 2 cents--it's not quite as simple as you make it sound is all.

EDIT: Another thing I forgot is the difference between power draw, heat, and noise when comparing the Nvidia cards with the AMD ones. The GTX 570 and 580 are quieter and cooler, while the 69xx cards draw less power. Also, the Nvidia cards perform better with AA enabled.
Except the fact that you can overclock the unlocked 6950's as well.Clearly a beastly combination no matter how you look at it.And that's only $600 for dual 6950's.

I think the fact that AMD included a designed-in bios recovery clearly shows AMD intended for this to be done.THIS is their ace-in-the-hole.

It would suck sales from the 6970 though. $70 less cash in AMD's pocket.

It gets real interesting if the 6990 can be unlocked to dual 6970 chips.

(Plus, the 6950's don't have limited edition numbering which was pretty cool.)

Awesome stuff. Glad people are continuing to have success with this. I know the GTX580 SLi owners probably feel pretty bad at this point since guys with two unlocked 6950s have better performance than them for about $550 USD less, but what can you do, that's the way of bleeding edge tech, so they knew what they were getting themselves into.

Ouch. And you also forgot to say ''more video RAM'' for less $.

Yeah ... SLI 580's aren't a good deal.

OTOH, I guarantee you that, with all cards at their max OC's, my unlocked 465/470's in SLI will easily compete w/unlocked 6950/6970, esp. in DX11 games.

And they were even cheaper

No they won't. 470s are ~25% slower than 570s, and ~15% slower when both are heavily OC'd. So the 6950/70s, which perform better than 570 in multi-GPU mode and in higher resolutions, would be about ~25% faster than 470s in a CF, high-res config.
