Overclocking with MA790X-UD4P and 1090T

Thread Starter
My wife gave me an AMD 1090T for Christmas and I have dropped it into my PC. Everything seems to be ok, but now I would like to overclock it. First thing I think is that I need a better fan. I had a ZeroTherm Butterfly BFT90, but I can't see anything that says the Butterfly will work with a 1090T. So I need a new fan (BTW, the stock fan is really loud so that is a consideration). Recommendations? The Zalman's seem to be popular.

My MB is a Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P. The next step is that I can't figure out if I should upgrade my memory. I have 4GB of G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory. Do I need to go to 1066 memory to overclock effectively?

Then when it comes to actually overclocking, I don't get the whole voltage thing. I understand messing with the multiplier. Can someone help me understand why I need to mess with the voltage?

You have an awesome wife your memory should be fine, if it does hold you back you will eventually know yourself, but don't waste your money if it doesn't. Be sure you update your BIOS to the latest to properly support the x6.

The case is an Antec Performance P180. I've had it since June 2007. Ballparking it looks like I have about 6 inches of clearance in the case from the processor, but I am also worried about the width and length to fit on the MA790X-UD4P. I saw a Scythe today at work and the thing was enormous. I just don't want to mess with it if it won't fit on the motherboard.

That board can fit a Silver Arrow so I wouldn't worry about a Scythe

I looked at the Silver Arrow, and while impressive, it is a little out of my price range. Other thougths?

OK, I think I misunderstood you. Are you saying that because it can fit a Silver Arrow it will also take a Scythe? I first thought you were saying skip the Scythe to get the Silver Arrow. But I noticed you have my motherboard and a Silver Arrow, so I checked and a Scythe SCMG-2100 is 130mm x 100mm x 158mm whereas a Silver Arrow is 147mm x 123mm x 160mm.

So you think the Scythe will fit, right?
