Gtx 280 Help Please

Thread Starter
So I recently picked up a Evga Gtx 280 from a member at Hardforum to replace my Xfx 5750. I recently noticed that windows recognizes two monitors connected to the gfx card. However im currently only using one dvi port. I reinstalled drivers, and installed a new copy of windows 64 bit. Neither of these work, so I tried moving my card to the second pciex16 slot on my motherboard. This worked for a short period of time, when I booted into windows it only recognized on display, then I updated my nividia drivers and im back to windows thinking there are two monitors connected. The last thing I've tried is reinstalling the cooler. The card came with a Zalman Vf3000, and i thought it might have been making contact with the dvi port and shorting it out. After reinstalling and making sure there was no contact windows still saw two monitors. The reason this concerns me is because I just got a 42" Samsung Plasma tv (1080p) and I want to use it as a secondary monitor. My initial plan was to use the second dvi port for this, but since it doesnt seem to work would the s-video port display the same quality as the dvi would have? And also, if anyone has any ideas, (other than baking) on how to get the dvi port to work again that would be awesome. Thanks.

Oh and my system specs are as follows:
Q8300
4gb GSkill Ram
Msi P7N Diamond
Evga Gtx 280 SCC w/ Zalman VF3000
Ocz GamexStream 700
500gb F3 Drives x 2

first have to ask if the person you bought it from gave information for warrenty and hopefully it is still covered. If it's not I can't remember a guide where it fixes a pcie slot using an old pci gpu if I can find it on here I'll link it to you. But other than that I think you've tried all the things that I would do. Good luck

nevermind about the guide I don't think that would fix your
problem but I guess it's worth a shot. Also I would just call the gpu makers tech support

Alright I sent a message to the seller, while im waiting for him to respond I tried to get the second dvi port to work. I decided I would reinstall windows with my monitor connected to the dead dvi port. The windows installation worked succesfully and the dead dvi port was working. But as soon as windows recognizes that its a gtx 280 the second dvi port stops working again. Could it be windows thats disabaling the second dvi port?

Have you tried to install the card in a completely different computer to see if you could reproduce the same problem?

I'm sure a friend of yours would allow you to do that on his or her system provided you don't nuke his or her windows (disconnect his hard drive and install windows on a spare and install on that, for example).

Have you considered using Driver Sweeper to remove any trace of the video drivers, physX, 3d stereo and then installing an older set of drivers such as: 258.96_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql

...rather than the 260-262 which many have reported problems with?
