In any case, if the program is CUDA-compatible, you can offload the task to the GPU if its an NVIDIA GPU...
I do a bit of video editing, fold, and as ive said, everything else. Personally I would prefer an overpowered CPU and a weaker GPU, but I do know about CUDA and all that jazz.
Im probably going to get a GPU and a new HSF for my CPU. Ill push the little weakling as far as I can.
Thanks for the help.

I Game a moderate amount but I also do some programming and graphic design. This computer is an all around workhorse though, If I need something done this computer needs to be able to do it for me.

These are my options. If you have a better idea make your case and ill see if I like it. As I see it these are the most viable choices.

I could go with an Athlon II X4 640 and pick up a 500GB-1TB storage drive.
I could grab a GTX465 and OC it(Been wanting one for a LOOONG time and my GT240 is kinda dumpy).
I could grab a Phenom II X4 955BE.
I could sit on my $175 and let the fact that my poor Compy is low-tier eat away at me. (NOT AN OPTION)

In short, Ive got $175 to spend, Help me choose what will give me the best performance and usage boost. Because im torn 3 ways.
Some thoughts:

1. At a glance, it would appear that the weakest elements of your computer are your graphics card and your power supply. Unfortunately, a good power supply of higher wattage would take all of your money, so you would want to consider the best card that would run well within that limitation.

2. One route would be to get a GTS 450, which is a low power, high performance part. It is roughly equal to a 9800 GTX+, while the GT240 is roughly on par with a 9600 GSO. GTS 450 also scales very well with SLI, becoming roughly equal to a single GTX 470. This gives you a future upgrade option (though you would need a new board at some point in the future).

3. You might consider that the GTX465 consistently benchmarks lower than the GTX460 1GB. It also would be pushing it to run those on a 500 watt power supply, though you might be able to get away with it (at least for a few months).

4. You might consider selling your GT240 and then using that money with what you have left after you have bought a GTS450, to upgrade your system a little further in some other area.

This is the best advice so far, but it's stretching your budget. Buy used at the OCN marketplace and you'll be able to do it - and you'll get proven overclockers.

I'm also a prior GTX 465 owner, and I'd advise in favor of either GTS 450, GTX 460 1GB, or GTX 470. The GTX 465 really has no place in the NVIDIA lineup.

CUDA is very good for folding. You can fold a lot better on a GPU than on a CPU at the same price point.

Thing is, if his budget is really limited, he might want to consider doing it in a few manageable stages.

However, he could get a 2.8 GHz Phenom II triple core and a GTS 450 for almost $175, right now on newegg.

1) Get the best possible deal on a GTS 450 and save the rest of his money, while selling the GT240.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-079-_-Product
$105 + free shipping

2) Then when he's sold the GT240 he can use that money and what was left over to get a quad core chip.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-871-_-Product
$100 + free shipping

..or a triple core Phenom II..
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-679-_-Product
$75 + free shipping (he might just be able to get this and the card in one step)

3) Then sell the dual core chip and with that see if he can make another improvement.

This is true.

I've read you can tri-SLI the 465, and that you can't do that with the 460. Other than that, no point in the 465.
