ATI most certainly did NOT screw you. You got what you paid for. We don't have to worry if it works or not. We paid for the guarantee of getting a 6970. Not much I know, but hindsight is always 20/20. We had no way of knowing about the unlocking. My advice is don't worry about it and enjoy your card, or sell it and get Nvidia if your so butthurt over it.

Really ? I would think this would put a real damper on the GTX560 that's coming out, as well as direct discussion towards the 6950 and away from the 560. Don't you think?
I would think volume of sales would come into effect. Especially if they didn't start disabling the shaders physically. Let's see if they really are that smart.

yes , no doubt they caught onto this but theres not much they can do ? all they can do is be more careful with their next gen cards ... But then again i wouldnt be suprised if they made a new revision of 69XX cards that wont be unlockable .

But i think ati did a good thing , makes things intersting ... definatly good for ati , nvidia has something to worry about now with these unlockable cards that are close in performance to their gtx580 which is almost double the price

gtx580 = $718

6970 = $480

6950 = $400

Id love to see some banchmarks with an unlocked 6950 against a gtx580 just to see the difference/price ratio . I know the 580 is quite a beast though ..

580 is a beast. It would be no different than running it against a 6970. But price/performance ratio goes through the roof.
In that respect, ATI/AMD is the undisputed king for now. Until they start physically disabling shaders.

Yeah, I am not worried about the unlocking GPU. I thought for a while, but I am happy with my purchase - it will last me for quite some time time I change my motherboard (will wait for LGA 2011).

But I wonder what happens to those modified 6950's taking in less power than a 6970. The 6970 has more power pins....lets see what happens...

6970 is the card to go , but unlocking the 6950 make these 2 pretty much on par . 6970 is the better overclocker , thats why it will always be that little bit superior because you can almost clock them to 1ghz ..where as my unlocked 6950 can only see 905/1440 until i get voltage control atleast , then things will get interesting .

Oh man... this is great. I'm about to hop on this...

what if ATi/AMD releases a driver or something to revert this? Or is that possible?

they should have known someone will crack onto this and now when everyone finds out about it i woudnt be suprised if the sales of the 6970 go down because its that easy to flash the bios of the 6970 to ur 6950 and get the same performance for less dollars.
they pretty much set us up for it, i mean, they gave us a recoverable bios chips left the solder points for an 8 pin connector, gave us identical coolers, allowed voltage tweeks AND neglected to laser the extra cores off epic fail by AMD
