Quick Cool 'N' Quiet question.

post #1 of 16
Thread Starter
Should i have Cool 'n' Quiet turned off or on when overclocking?

Tried to OCing my 955 but had some problems with getting it stable @ 3.85Ghz.

Could Cool 'N' Quiet be the cause of my problem?

You should turn it off while OCing, but turn it back when you are done with it. Saves power and the CPU doesnt have to run max all the time.

Your problems might be related to it, or it might have to do with not enough vcore.

What Revision is your 955 C2? or C3?

My C3 955 wont go past 3.97ghz, doesn't matter how voltage I throw at it. CnQ could be causing more problem, I would turn it off.

What settings are you running for 3.85Ghz?

C3 stepping!
CPU Freq. = 220mhz up from 200mhz
Multiplier = 17.5 ~ 3850mhz
NB Multi = 12.0 ~ 2640mhz
NB Volt = 1.2000v
HT Bus Speed = Auto
HT Bus Width = Auto
Voltage = 1.3875v

RAM runs at 440mhz 6-6-6-15-21-2T

It's a semi-stable OC really. Not quite 24/7.

I'm running the settings below in my sig. You could give those a whirl and see where it gets you. I don't like using half multi's so maybe try bumping it up to 18 x 215 and increase the cpu voltage one notch if you have decent cooling. What sort of temps are you seeing at your current clocks?

Maybe drop HT-link to 2000?

Temps are pretty good. 1.4v and the chip doesn't go above 50c under max load (reaches about 48c during Crysis Warhead). Running H50 with single stock fan (will be upgrading to 2 decent fans soon enough)

Anyways, thanks for the advice Flux (+1 rep for you). Will try your settings a.s.a.p.

TBH i think i have a not so good NB so reaching 4Ghz might be tricky but i think i can get 3.8Ghz. Also been trying to push the FSB to it's max, so maybe dropping it down might help with stability.

What are your NB settings just out of interest?

225X17.5 @1.408V. I left everything else alone and only changed the cpu freq and cpu voltage.
NB is around 2200mhz I think from memory, My sig rig is down for a complete rebuild.

A combination of a higher multi and a slightly lower CPU freq may very well get you to where you want to be.
