At the moment im trying to format four primary drives under windows 7:
On installation of windows 7 i formatted just the c: drive and left the rest unallocated.

At the moment i have:

Any suggestions?

whenever I try to make more than 3 primary volumes it just creates more logical ones.
Is there a problem because of that?

try extending your 800gb volume to make it bigger

You can only make 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions + 1 extended partition on a single drive. Logical partitions can be created in this extended partition.

For some reason, the Windows 7 partition maker takes the liberty of choosing the 3 primary partition + 1 extended partition option. In a way, that makes sense because it would not be possible to create another partition on a drive with 4 primary partitions in the future without destroying at least 1 partition. This was a usability design decision on MS' part.

I don't recall Vista's restrictions, but the XP partition manager did allow 4 primary partitions to be made. If you want only 4 primary partitions, you need a third party partition program if you're using Win 7.

Modern OS' have no problems booting off a logical partition though.

Are the hard drive jumpers in the cable select position? Explain a little better, which drivers are physical, and which are simple partitions.
